Lander sighed. “Sorry, it was me,” he lied, feeling sorry for the young Shadowhunter. “Can’t control it.” It would be easier to understand a ghost not being able to control what he touches and what he can’t than to understand a clumsy Shadowhunter. “I’ll ask my warlock to put it back together, no harm done,” he said calmly.
“Oh.” He furrowed his brow, sure that it was his elbow that bumped the vase and not someone or something else. “That’s all fine, dude. No harm, no foul.” Freddie smiled at Lander, going to give him a fist bump before he remembered. The cold on his skin should have been the hint first but he wasn’t really on point at the moment. “Right. Sorry.”
“You know, typically when culprits attempt to plead their innocence they put a little effort into it.” Shane remarked, arms folded over his chest as he turned to analyse the situation. “That and they don’t typically bother when the evidence is stacked against them.” He added, amusement evident in his tone as he motioned to the ancient now broken vase at the feet of the other.
“I’ve never had to plead my innocence before, this is a new experience for me.” He smiled wryly, rubbing the back of his neck. It was hard to believe that this was a boy who could actually weld a sword. Right now, he looked like a child who had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. “Do I have any chance of you not dobbing me in? Maybe hiding the evidence with me? No?”
Hazel eyes glanced upwards at the sound of something shattering, followed by her brothers sheepish apology. Dawn had never met a shadowhunter with less hand-eye co-ordination than her younger brother before, even with the aid of the angelic runes that enhanced their stamina, balance, endurance and more. Slender fingers tapped the page of her demon languages text book that was opened out in front of her, a look of exasperation sinking into her delicate features as she brushed a stand of dark hair out of her eye.
❝ What did you break this time, Ricky? ❞
“Nothing, nothing.” He glared at Dawn as he brushed the shattered mug under the counter subtly. “And don’t call me Ricky.” Freddie hissed under his breath, his light eyes narrowing. “You know I hate it, Sunrise.” He was annoyingly proud of himself for that joke, even to this day. It may have been his five year old mind that came up with it but it always annoyed his older sister. That was one of his favourite past times, making Dawn look like she was about to kill him. He leaned his head on her shoulder, blinking up at her with a grin. “What you reading?”
attention caught by the loud noise, caroline turned her gaze upon the closest person around, eyebrows raised as she tried to see what had just been broken. but then she saw that his reaction was more interesting and so she crossed her arms, stepping closer. “ that’s exactly what all criminals say. ” squinting her eyes at him, she then broke the act, grinning as she waved a hand dismissively. “ nah, i don’t care about what was that. and i doubt anyone really would, especially lately. ”
“I’m not a criminal, I can say that completely truthfully.” He matched her grin as soon as her face broke, his lips lifting up. “I’d probably be the worst criminal in the world actually. You’ve just witnessed by stealth and tracking skills.” Freddie still leaned down to grab some of the broken glass, collecting it up carefully. “Would you hate it if I asked for you to get me a bin? You can say no, it’s fine. Not your mess to deal with.”
She should take a few days off or just sell the cafe anyway - there was too much going on and knowing shadowhunters, there are even more problems ahead of them. But it would give her some dose of free time and Eva didn’t want that - ending up getting stressed and nervous and dig into things she shouldn’t dig anymore. Warlock lifted her head to look at the source of noise, moving from her spot and coming closer. She should be angry, but the boy looked so… innocent, that Eva smiled at him gently. He looked just like Stella when she was a little kid and did something. “Don’t worry about that, accidents happen,” she said, looking down at the broken mug. “But you’re still up to pay for the drink.”
Freddie fumbled with his wallet slightly, already prepared to pay for the mug. His cheeks were so red and it wasn’t made any better by the fact that the boss was speaking to him about this. “I think that’s my whole life.” He joked half heartedly before holding out more bills than was needed. “Is this okay?”
quill first jumped at the calamitous crashing noise, then at the other shadowhunter who quickly turned towards him. “oh! i know,” his expression morphed quickly from surprise to confusion, mouth twisting into a frown as he glanced at the mess in front of him. “it was me…i think. i suppose it could’ve been a ghost, but i haven’t seen one around recently. have you?”
He couldn’t be sure if Quill was actually taking the fall for him but he grinned. “I’m more than happy to blame a ghost for that.” He rubbed the back of his neck though, if someone were to ask him, it would be impossible for him to lie about it. “Or maybe we just pretend that didn’t happen.”
Emily had been in the sidelines, watching the discussion with interest, she’d been making notes of anything important to pass onto those who couldn’t make it to the meeting. She, like most of the others, jumped when the sound of something smashing echoed in the room but she smiled to herself upon seeing the embarrassed boy. “”It’s fine,” she assured him, keeping her voice down as the meeting continued. “Nothing a little magic can’t solve.” With a flick of her wrist, the object repaired itself.
He smiled at her gratefully as she fixed the object that he had accidentally broken. “Thank you.” Freddie murmured. “I definitely owe you one.” The meeting sounded as though it was coming to an end and Freddie stood, stretching out his spine and offering a hand to Emily. “Freddie, by the way. Just if you have to call in that favour at any point.”

BIOGRAPHY
Growing up, Freddie was the happy kid. He smiled, laughed, joked, teased, he was the guy you went to when you wanted a laugh. Everything around him lit up the same way he did, even when it came to the training that he had to endure each and every day. He never let the constant yelling from his father, nor the rumours that circled around him and his siblings, get him down. There was no point. His frame of mind was this: If you couldn’t make it better, find something else to be happy about. Even as an adult, he has followed the same mindset. Perhaps the sense of humour came from the mother’s side.
His mother has always been a sore spot but he tries to remember that he didn’t know the woman. It was Luca and Dawn that lost a mother, he never experienced what one was truly like. There is a shadow that falls over his face when she is mentioned though because she left after him. Not Dawn, not Luca, he was the one that she was disappointed with. Perhaps there really was something wrong with him if he had been the last straw. That thought swirls to the surface sometimes, those are the moody days, the ones where he is reckless and thoughtless. He only thinks of himself that day, seeking anything to stop him feeling that.
On a good day though, Freddie is a flirty pain in the ass. He gets in the way, says the wrong thing, can’t lie when he really should try to but he has too much charisma for it to actually get him in trouble. He smirks, winks, wraps an arm around a shoulder and people just sigh. He’s used to that reaction too.
When he was becoming a Shadowhunter, he struggled in a way that he hadn’t before. His sister had her throwing knives, Luca was just amazing at anything in his eyes, he couldn’t see where he fit yet. But then Freddie saw it, a forged katana. From the moment it was held in his hand, it became an extension of him. He’s rarely seen without it once he’s out of the institute.
Between that and the runes that cover him... Freddie normally feels pretty badass.
It was a tense situation, everyone seemed to be on edge and Freddie was trying his best to just blend in with it all, to listen to what others were saying and just keep his mouth shut. But the smashing of something incredibly fragile turned eyes to him and he couldn’t stop the words coming out of his mouth. “I-didn’t-do-it.” He said it quickly, like it was all one word, his cheeks flushing red.
