Australian soldiers relax in the trenches.  The Anzacs were back in action at Pozières in the third week of August 1916.  “When you get this, I’ll be dead; don’t worry,” wrote Sergeant D.G.J. Badger, a former bank clerk, to his parents before an attack that week.  He was killed on August 21.

21 August 1916 - Letter to Edith from The Somewhere

This August letter to Edith provides reassurances that his time at the guns, though busy, was quiet. Fred also describes heavy work at the horse lines to prepare for an inspection by the General. Fred then notes that he spent some time in charge of the gun while his sergeant was in the trenches for a few days.

Fred tells Edith about tidying his accommodations and improvements made to their gun pit, including painting it white, and “fitting up and electric lighting system.” This included different small lights for men doing different tasks at the gun. 

Near the end of the letter, Fred provides a quick comment on the cool and rainy weather, stating, “at least there is no dust, tho’ I prefer dust to mud.” Given the well-tread grounds around camp and in the battle lines, no doubt most days Fred was covered in one form of dirt or the other.

These images of rather forlorn-looking children and their props suggests to us something of the status of childhood in the Victorian era, at least among the affluent. Here they are objects of display and performance with a sense of elevated decorum, suggesting a cultish commodification of childhood. At the same time, their expressions seem to portray an underlying sense of ennui and the effects of being constantly prodded to be proper and polite by disengaged elders.
