Discipline is Self Belief
Right now Iām a recent graduate student that majored in graphic design. Four years ago I thought this was the ticket to getting the best of both worlds in a career. The fantasy of pursuing an Art Degree without to much of regret of pursing a āart degree.ā
Four year (letās be real, 5 years) of working, critiquing, producing, editing, learning about design to a point of exhaustion. Spending late nights up till 5am completing passion projects and resending files. Saving work over and over again thats marked as filed Final_version07, just to rename it again because you seen a yet another small detail you left out. Building and destroying your creative confidence for the best layout. Thinking youāre not creative enough. Thinking youāre burning the passion you had for something you thought will be fun. Educating yourself about the history of design. Imitating work to find your style. Fall back in love with hobbies you tried, but didnāt get far with. Now youāre more than happy to pick up again.
Years of experience of putting work into something you enjoyed, hated, and then loved again only to graduate later with nothing to offer you.
Iāve been job searching for 3 months since I graduated. I know, not enough time to truly feel failure yet, but after applying to now 100 jobs I feel defeated. Nothing is worst than looking at all the work you produced waiting to be seen by an employer on your portfolio, then here nothing in return. Even worse when you apply for an entry level job, only to find out they only hiring candidates with 5 years of experience? However, those 5 years in college and campus jobs do not count. No no noā¦ somehow while getting a full degree I needed to have a whole 5 years of experience under my belt to even be seen by an AI resume manager.
It really hurts knowing your a great candidate for a job, but instantly blocked because AI never stops to consider you. It hurts when people say youāre perfect for the role, then ghost your application. It hurts thinking youāre not good enough for anything. Even a retail job is hard to get a simple call back.
Iāve always been blindly optimistic, if I ask for it I will get something from it. Good luck or a response thatāll clear up my doubts, but hearing nothing makes me fearful. I just want a call back, a successful interview, a clear answer on if Iām doing this right. I love feedback, it always reminds me that Iām doing something right. Now Iām raw dogging life.
I donāt have a clear way to end this yet, but Iām just praying for opportunities to come forth this week. Probably speaking to void since I donāt have anyone else to talk to about this.
