Something different: My 7 tips for reducing anxiety
I don’t normally put posts out like this, however the world has suddenly changed.
The world can undoubtedly be a stressful place. There are always things going on somewhere that the majority of people question and are against morals.
Something has happened that is close to my heart, and even if it wasn’t it would still have affected me in a similar way. Why? Because it can effect all of us in an instant. Things can change in the blink of an eye.
The media can make events more stressful for some, with constant updates and alerts. If the constant reports on media is something you find too much, I have put some tips together that help me in situations like this. They get you out of the situation for a break and can be transferred to many situations.
Turning off alerts on your phones, watches, tablets and PCs for things like news sources can help with the constant updates and also with the urge to check.
Set yourself a limit of checking the news 1 or 2 times a day.
Books are a great way to take you into another world and forget what is happening around you.
Puzzles, drawing and colouring
Puzzles are a great way to focus the mind and there are many forms. Form crosswords and word searches to jigsaws. I prefer paper based puzzle books but you can use apps.
Drawing is a great way to refocus the mind, as is colouring. You don’t need any special tools for drawing or colouring and can be done at any age. There are some great adult colouring books about but you could always print some from the internet.
Just getting out the house can be a great way for me to clear my mind and focus on the now. Taking your dog if you have one, or just walking by yourself. I like to walk in my local area without travelling anywhere but you can always go to your local park or nature reserve if you feel where you are is too busy.
I personally find that getting out of the house and into nature a great way to ease anxiety and clear my mind.
This isn’t for everyone, however being someone who never used to enjoy gardening I would encourage anyone to give it a try. You do not need special equipment and can be done on any budget. For me, I like to use pots, I find them easier to maintain and they don’t have to take a lot of time.
Sometimes just talking to someone about your thoughts and concerns can also be good. It doesn’t have to be someone you know, there are lots of ways now that you can find someone.
Finding a group on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter where you all have a common interest can be a good way to find advice or people to talk to.
Stereo is a platform I like to use sometimes. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s an app that people use to talk live about topics of their choice. I’d say it’s a cross between a podcast, radio show and live broadcast.
Friends or relatives can be great people to talk to, people that know you. However there is also places like Samaritans if you feel that’s the option for you.
Sounds simple, but focused breathing techniques can help with anxiety symptoms.
There are also apps like calm and headspace that can help reduce anxiety and clear the mind.
There are many different ways to take your focus away from something stressful and refocus the mind; these just a few. Hopefully you find them helpful.
