1. what’s your blog title from?

It's my favorite lyric from a Boublil & Schönberg musical EDIT: I see now it says title. that's a film Roman Roy greenlit LOL

2. what movie have you watched most recently? what did you think of it?

A New Leaf (1971), it's of the 70s but it's so doing its own thing and I totally loved the final scene of the movie

3. what are you looking forward to right now?

Seeing Chris Fleming & Jason Mantzoukas next week

4. if you could do anything at all today, what would it be?

Go to the movies & forest

5. what’s your drink of choice? (coffee/tea order, alcohol of choice, pop, etc)

hot chocolate

7. what's your favorite way to travel? Is there a mode of travel you haven't done that you want to experience?

Traveling anywhere uniquely disintegrates my synapses but if the conditions that it's on time and completely devoid of others in the same car are met, a front-facing seat train can be good. I have ambitions of riding my first funicular, suspension railway, heritage streetcar, steam train, and convertible on the pacific coast highway

8. favorite month of the year and why?

Maybe May because I'm not into the Fall color scheme, there's still fun colored flowers and it's warm enough

9. favorite time of day and why?

golden hour because it's yellow

10. do you play or follow any sports? & elaborate on that?

11. what kind of music is stuck in your head a lot lately?

pinkpantheress moreso that I'm interested in her cultural trajectory than anything else, + she's making union jack londoncore whimsical again

12. dishes or laundry?

13. what's something you learned recently?

Oldest bridge in NYC still standing is High Bridge b/t the bronx & manhattan, but they've changed the middle out from its original classic arch design

14. if you could give a TED talk on anything, what would you talk about?

I don't think I can really talk about anything I know in my head spontaneously for long enough to sustain anything, but if I had to choose a topic to research and prepare it'd probably be about people-forward urban design and the benefits of beautifying public spaces

15. what’s a piece of advice you find yourself giving a lot?

Probably how to get to do stuff cheaply in the city + the merits of culturally shopping around to find your tastes and trying new things out

16. what's a piece of advice you would give to yourself five years ago?

You'll never have a ship go canon, always give up

17. do you believe in luck and superstition? do you carry any lucky items or follow any lucky rules?

certainly not. Sometimes for fun I carry around a figurine of my favorite star wars character as my protector, when I don't misplace the item

18. are you musical? play any instruments or sing? would you ever perform for an audience?

19. write, type, or speak?

I struggle with speaking a lot of the time, it's a lot harder to gather together a point that I'd like to convey, so I'm not really fond of oration. I guess type since it's faster than hand writing

20. what do you wish someone would ask you?

"I've just watched BBC Mum, which is your favorite monologue on the show?"

the way it's been over a decade since bernie & serena started up and lowkey that hasnt been touched since on TV. even considering alllllll the issues, notwithstanding the genre limitations as it isn't easy being a soap opera couple, I don't believe any filmed media has come close to doing what they were doing with those two in terms of romance w/ wlw characters over 40

I'm all ears if anyone feels like there's been amazing instances of overt middle-aged & older onscreen wlw romance going on in the past ten years, but for the most part major media moments have been on my radar and nobody's really done what bernie & serena did

The father habitually tries to resemble the child and is afraid of his sons, and the son likens himself to the father and feels no awe or fear of his parents. And the resident alien feels himself equal to the citizen and the citizen to him, and the foreigner likewise. The teacher in such case fears and fawns upon the pupils, and the pupils pay no heed to the teacher or to their overseers either. And in general the young ape their elders and vie with them in speech and action, while the old, accommodating themselves to the young, are full of pleasantry and graciousness, imitating the young for fear they may be thought disagreeable and authoritative.

Reasons to watch Better Man (the Robbie Williams Monkey movie) in cinemas while you still can:

Something I’ve really been missing from movie musicals, even as the genre has made a comeback in recent years is the big, ambitious choreographed dance number, and this movie has those in spades. The CGI expands on already cool choreography and adds to the spectacle in all sorts of fun ways. 

The entire Rock DJ sequence in particular is kind of astounding, and it deserves to be experienced on a big screen. 

A lot of biopics get stuck pleasing producers or playing up the lead as a genius or hero, but there’s none of that here. Robbie Williams knows he was never an “artist” and he’s got no one left to prove himself to. The emotional honesty on display is unparalleled. 

He also clearly still kind of hates Noel and Liam Gallagher’s guts so there’s an amazingly ridiculous vibe in their scenes

The exact right amount of dumb monkey puns

The little monkey kid is very cute and it actually helps you have empathy in a fucked up way? Like I care more about the cartoon monkey than I care about actual exploited teen pop stars

There’s a really cool sword fight 

The monkey metaphor completely works on every level, I swear to god

Rocketman did not get enough love either but it’s very much like Rocketman! But again, without the attempt to soften the edges or waste time pretending any of this is about artistic integrity.  

The movie gets real about, fame, fear, abandonment and addiction and it made me tear up a few times ngl  

My main gripe would be that it’s a little bit cliché, but like it’s also a complete reinvention of the genre, so it’s not like it’s THAT cliché

The CGI monkey tells you, the person watching this, to go fuck yourself.

It’s OK to not know the songs or who Robbie Williams is. The movie tells you. That’s how biopics work!
