“When have I ever asked you to change everything?” Magnus watched him, watched him defend the people who very suddenly couldn’t trust him, the people he felt he had to try harder for, when he was already one of the best. And Magnus wondered if Alec simply expected to push himself until he broke through whatever wall he thought was stopping him, or if he’d just smash himself against it until he was whole. “You don’t have to stop being a Shadowhunter Alec! I would never ask you to change that part of yourself. If I wanted pieces of you, and not the whole man I never would have fallen for you to begin with. Why can’t you understand? I don’t want you to change, I just want you beside me. I want you to want to be beside me without me having to push you for it. Spend time with me, that’s all I ask.”

Alec flinched slightly at the words being thrown at him. For a short moment, he didn’t know what to say or feel and so he just. Stared. “I kissed you in front of everyone. The most important people of the Clave were there. My parents were there. And you think you’re just some dirty secret to me? I’m sorry that you feel like I’m abandoning you. I’m just doing my job. I would have not risked everything if I would feel indifferent towards you. But because I don’t, I need to prove myself. I need to show the Clave and my parents that I can still do this. That I’m still as good and responsible at this as I was before… before… any of this.”
