Napoleon’s coronation may not have had a proper “le yoink” as some believe, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some behind-the-scenes drama. Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, was not well liked by the Bonaparte clan. His three sisters hated Josephine with a French fury of epic proportions. Napoleon asked two of his sisters to be part of the ceremony and they were to carry the massive velvet train of Josephine’s dress during the procession.

They refused.

They refused vigorously.

Napoleon would go on to conquer the world, but he had very little control over these Real Housewives of Corsica. In the end, he had to threaten to take away all of their wealth and status before they would agree.

As Josephine made her entrance, the Bonaparte sisters trailed behind tugging on the train. Josephine was determined and tried not to appear fazed, but as she climbed the steps the sisters gave one final jerk. Josephine very nearly lost her balance and fell backward, but in a grand defiance of gravity itself, she regained her composure and finished her journey to the dais.

The sisters’ efforts to embarrass her were in vain, but their disdain for Josephine lived on in the official painting of the ceremony.
