The fire red cherries in Azathoth’s tank. Bonus Az in one pic, haha. They are breeding very true in that tank. Thanks to Az grazing on any he can catch, the genetic pool is small, but it seems to be working in the favor of continued deep red coloration. I’m not going to complain!

5 Ways to Sex Cherry Shrimp

1. Males and females have different tail shapes. The underside of a female’s tail bulges out in a round football shape:

…while male shrimp tails are more slim or concave.

2. Female shrimp usually have a ‘saddle’ of unfertilized eggs on their backs. It’s the yellow thing in the following photo. (They may also have, y’know, actual fertilized eggs which is a big giveaway.)

3. When fertile females are around, or after a large water change, male shrimp tend to swim around restlessly in the open water. It’s often called the ‘mating dance’.

4. Full-grown male shrimp tend to be smaller and 5. less colorful than their female counterparts!

Some photos of the shrimp tank! At the top, one of the new babies on a marimo (they’re about 3/4mm? Just for scale) then one of our medium sized shrimps (I… think this is a male? I am still super bad at distinguishing saddles. Also on a marimo, the baby is the little fuzzy blob in the background) then one of our big red girls, and then a little mystery snail :)
