If the students of South Side High had been a pack of wolves, Averie was doing everything right. She walked the halls with her head down, avoiding eye contact and trying not to be noticed. Even so, nearly every day someone decided to notice her, and then every day she had to try very hard not to hate her own body. They weren’t telling her anything she didn’t know. She knew that her loosest shirts still outlined the fat she was desperate to hide, knew that her thighs clung to seats when she wore shorts, she knew, and she didn’t need anyone else to tell her. She wished she was brave enough to respond, to tell them that she had a medical condition that made weight loss ridiculously difficult, but even more than that to tell them that weight didn’t define a person. Then again, she wasn’t sure that she believed that.
