“If there were like movies and books, I’d be engaged by now.” She said laughing a bit. “I don’t even know if being good at meeting people should be a thing..like how hard is it to just not be awkward when meeting someone.”

“I’m not entirely sure.” Freya admitted. Even though she wasn’t shy to approach people, she had to admit she was quite awkward in conversations at times as well. “Maybe everyone’s awkward, in one way or another. But maybe it’s also not such a bad thing to not be engaged. I mean, you’re still young.”

“Fuck yeah she should,” Colby shouted, probably a bit too loudly, not that she cared. What was the point of going through life if were going to be unnoticed? “See, if I was her, I would dump his sorry ass and let him find some other girl who’d be plenty happy to stay home and play housewife.” Colby shook her head, scoffing slightly at the arguing couple as she placed her drink down on the table with a gentle thud.

“Maybe.” Freya said slowly, knowing she probably was the worst one to make assumptions on this, at least not considering her track record with unhealthy relationships and letting guys use her. “Or maybe they’re just fighting about something ridiculous as whether to have salad or sushi for dinner, and we’re totally overreacting here.”

                    Archer tilted his head to the side slowly, watching the young woman from the corner of his eye as she repeated what he’d not heard the first time around. He was usually very good at paying attention, but even that had slipped lately—- and especially today, it seemed. Catching her words, he was prompted to look down at the drink in his hand, as if he hadn’t really seen it until then. “It’s scotch,” he told her with a hint of a smile. “Macallan, single malt. If you like scotch, I’d recommend it.” 

“Scotch.” Freya echoed slowly, nodding a little as she looked down at the glass. The truth was, she knew hardly anything about alcohol -- or what tasted good. She didn’t drink it all that often, and whenever she did, she just had what others ordered or advised her to drink. “I have to admit I know nothing about scotch, or whether I like it. But it still looks good, and I’m a big fan of buying whatever has pretty packaging or just looks good on its own so... I might try it.”

               Like the good uncle he was pretending to be, Archer had spent the day at IKEA with his fifteen year old niece, nodding his head and carrying all the seemingly useless stuff she picked out. Normally he would’ve said no to at least eighty percent of the stuff, but he was really trying to RECONNECT with her, and since she was going to live at his place half the time— he figured she should at least do with her room whatever she saw fit… even if that meant buying all kinds of Swedish crap. Needless to say, he was in need of a stiff drink before spending his night trying to assemble furniture he didn’t even know what was. As soon as he’d dropped off his niece at his parents’ house, he hit the nearest bar and sat down with a sigh. Halfway through his second drink, he realized someone had sat down next to him when they’d apparently been trying to talk to him. 

                                  “Hm? Sorry— were you talking to me?”

            There was something quite fascinating about meeting strangers. As much as Freya enjoyed just spending time with her animals, on her own, watching the stars or baking cupcakes, she also figured that whenever she did decide to go to places, she might as well try to make small talk with the people around her. Especially since, thanks to her job, she hardly got adult conversations anymore these days. So when she slipped onto a bar stool next to a complete stranger and ordered herself a soda. Despite all the things she loved, she had quite a bit of trouble starting conversations -- mostly because other people never liked what she liked. Therefore she decided to use the first words that came to mind when glancing over to the other.

                              “Oh -- yes. I just asked what you’re drinking. It looks good.”

“Alright, so here’s the deal,” Colby began, pointing the head of her beer bottle towards the couple across the other side of the bar. “He thinks that she should stop spending so much money on clothes and she thinks that he needs to stop telling what to do because it’s her money,” Colby’s voice cut off as she took a long sip from her beer, before putting her attention back on the arguing couple. “You may want to order yourself a drink and some popcorn because I think she’s about ten seconds away from slapping the taste right out of his mouth.” 

“Oh wow.” Freya said, a slight frown on her forehead as she listened to the brunette reconstruct the couple’s argument going on across the bar. She didn’t usually get herself involved in other people’s business, but it was kind of hard to withstand when someone pulled her into it like that. “Well -- if she does, good for her. I’m all for women taking their stance and showing guys their place.”

“Well It’s not like I completely off’d the idea of meeting people face-to-face instead of online, it was a blind date, my first and last. Besides, I’m not good with meeting people either way so I don’t think it matters at the end.” She said smiling a bit.

“Got it. Blind dates are not a good idea. Too bad movies and books always make us believe otherwise, isn’t it?” She sighed, smiling slightly. “I don’t know. I think if it’s the right person, you’ll be good at meeting them. Or maybe that’s just me being romantic.”

“Hey, so I get this is totally weird as hell, but do you mind listening to this for me? And maybe tell me what you think of it? If your busy, I get it, just trying to figure out if I like it or not; thought a second opinion might help.” As he spoke, Noah removed his headphones and dangled them before the other. He had been working on his computer in public—trying to get the beat of his band’s new song to sound just right.

It took quite a bit for Freya to think something was weird -- she herself was probably weirder than anything most people had to offer, and therefore she didn’t hesitate to take the headphones extended towards her. “Not at all.” She smiled widely, tugging them into her ears. “So I’m guessing you made it?”

Sienna nodded. It really wasn’t a big deal, and she preferred if someone else took the other coffee than giving it away. “I’m absolutely sure. As much as I love coffee, I don’t think it would be good for my health to drink that much,” she admitted with a light chuckle. “That actually sounds amazing. Much better than my bitter black coffee,” she said before turning to the barista and letting him know the order of the second coffee.

“You’re right -- coffee isn’t that good, no matter how good it makes you feel.” She admitted with a soft chuckle, tugging loose strands of hair behind her ears as she stood next to the other. “But I’m pretty sure your bitter black coffee is still more healthy than mine. At least that’s what I’ve read once or twice.”

“Then he goes to say how beautiful my eyes are, they look like galaxies and they should be admired by millions of people around the world. Here’s where things get complicated, he whips it out in the middle of dinner saying that I should admire his penis the way that he admires my eyes.” Veronica explained, rolling her eyes in disgust. “Anyways, that’s the last time I let one of my co-workers talk me into dating on Tinder.”

Freya listened with a frown on her forehead, covering her mouth with her hand as the other went on about recalling her date. “He did not!”, she exclaimed in utter shock, unable to believe that anyone would say something like that. “I can’t believe anyone would say that. No, the whole online dating thing surely is no good. You should go back to meeting people in real life -- hopefully, they don’t think you should admire their penis like that.”

Milo really was caught up in his mind because he didn’t even see the person in the corner of his eye standing there, waiting for him to respond. He eventually snapped out of it and he nodded. “Of course! Sorry.. I was just thinking about some stuff.” He said as he shook his head slowly. “There’s nobody sitting there so go ahead and sit there. Sorry for being incredibly rude. I didn’t mean it, I promise.” He said with a soft smile on his face. “I’m Milo.” he said, sticking his hand out to her, waiting for her to shake it. 

“It’s fine. I get that. The thinking about stuff thing, I mean.” Freya smiled as she pulled herself onto the bar stool next to him, asking the bartender to get her a soda. “You weren’t being incredibly rude, I’ve witnessed much worse. You’re fine.” She tilted her head to the side, before taking his extended hand to shake it. “Freya. Nice to meet you, Milo. Do you want to share some of those thoughts in your head? Or rather not?”

“I haven’t actually come across one, just heard about it. It’s like the loch ness monster. Supposedly they exist, but no one has ever seen on in real life.” Maybe that was a terrible metaphor. “You  make it sound so dirty.”

A soft laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head. “And maybe no one ever will see one of them.” Raising her brows, she broke into even more laughter, covering her lips as she did so. “Dirty? God, I didn’t even know I can sound dirty.”

The smell reminded Milo of being in the room all by himself just a few months ago. He couldn’t tell if it actually smelled or he was just smelling something from his memory. It didn’t matter anyways. The twenty-one year old boy sat at the bar with a soda in his hand, thinking of ways to make it up to his family for what he had done to them. Milo felt the guilt running through his body of tearing his family apart from one another. He was the only one to blame for that. 

It wasn’t until he heard someone talking next to him that he snapped out of the illusion he was watching over and over in his head. He looked over at them. “I’m sorry, were you talking to me?” He asked kind of quietly, hoping that the other person didn’t think he was being rude.

Freya knew that most people in bars were there to mind their own business and have a drink or two. She also knew that most people just took whatever free seat there was -- but she thought that wasn’t all that polite. Instead, she wanted to make sure that no one minded her presence. She wasn’t really there that night to drink anyway; she just wanted to come down from a long and exhausting day at work. 

Moving towards the bar, she hesitated a moment as she stopped at one of the free bar stools, glancing over at the person already sitting there. “Do you mind if I sit down here?” She asked, but realized too late that he had been caught up in his own mind. “Oh -- sorry. I didn’t want to interrupt any important thoughts.” She apologized with a smile. “I was just asking if I can sit down here.”

“I always wondered what those people would think of televangelists. If it’s made by the devil, why would there be the word of God on it?” Seth grinned and nodded his head. “Of course, googling without permission is frowned upon isn’t it?”

“I never thought about it that way. But it’s a good question -- you should ask one of them if you ever happen to come across one, I’d love to hear the answer.” Freya smirked, taking a sip of her grin as she glanced over at him. “Probably. I do it anyway. I’m curious, I can’t help. And no one has to know.”

After spending the whole weekend surviving on the awful coffee they had in the hospital, Sienna was ready to drink something less bitter. She went to her favorite coffee place, the one she had discovered just a few weeks ago. Just as she was ordering her drink, the barista let her know she had a second drink for half the price. “Hey!” she said, a tiny smile on her face as she turned to see the person behind her. “I have a second drink for half the price, do you want to take it? I have enough with one,” she offered the stranger.

Freya lived for the small routines in her day. One of them was to get some hot chocolate after the day at the kindergarten was done -- she always stopped by her favorite place on the way home, seeking comfort and the feeling of having successfully finished with her day. Her eyes were still trailing over the menu ( she liked to try out new things every once in a while ), when the woman standing in line in front of her turned around and addressed her. “Oh, really?” She asked, a wide smile taking over her lips. “I won’t say no to that if you’re sure. I’m dying to get some hot chocolate with hazelnut flavor into my stomach.”

“Thank god.” Seth let out a relieved breath, never knowing what to talk about with people who didn’t watch TV or movies. He wasn’t an intellectual type, and his reading disorder kept him from pursuing many books. “Feel free to Google me all you want.” 

“Yeah, no, I’m not one of those people who think TV was handmade by Satan.” Freya chuckled softly, unable to imagine what her life would be like if she didn’t have shows and movies to flee into. “Oh, so I got your permission? That makes it even better. I hate googling people behind their backs.”
