The house changed in their absence—inhaled and exhaled, rattled and shook. “Oh, stop that,” Colin rasped, glancing from the swaying chandelier above the table to the locked slider straining to open. “If you don’t plan on showing yourself then behave, at least.”
Heart, Haunt, Havoc (The Gideon Testaments, #1) by Freydís Moon
“Sometimes shame is a lesson. Most of the time, it’s just a way for us to hate ourselves for the things we want.”
They shifted their eyes to the door. “What do you know about shame?”
“I’m Catholic,” Colin said, matter-of-factly, and braved a touch to Bishop’s knuckles.

Kye Lovato left their hometown in search of a better future, but when their estranged mother passes away, they return to their parish to settle her affairs. Even though Kye escaped their traumatic past, being back in swampy Madison, Louisiana only worsens their debilitating depression, increases their dissociative episodes, and intensifies the intrusive voice plaguing their every thought. The moment Kye steps foot into their childhood home, they know something is wrong. That night, they come face to face with the shadowy presence driving them mad: the handsome demon duke, Eli, who offers them an irresistible deal. In exchange for their soul, Eli will give them pain, pleasure, and power. Kye set a path for themself—live fast, die young—and Eli seems like the perfect exit route. With nothing to lose, they agree. But after an impromptu visit from a local ICE agent, Kye forms an unlikely friendship with their mother’s bookkeeper and stumbles into an insidious mystery surrounding their family’s homegrown alebrije business. Met with ghosts, displaced employees, and a garage filled with unfinished artwork, Kye can’t help but wonder. . . What was their mother hiding? And why is a rogue officer interested in Lovato Alebrijes? Kye is possessed, unkempt, and chasing death, but as stubborn as they are, they’re the only person left alive who can resurrect the family business and carry the Lovato legacy, and their only ally is the demon possessing them.
Mod opinion: I hadn't heard of this book before, but it sounds like an interesting horror romance.
Sometimes you have to write a deeply unsettling, problematic gay scene into your book because it's the writing equivalent of firing a gun in the neighborhood to keep the rent down
nooo don't get consumed by the half wolf ghost of your ex husband your so sexy aha

Religious eroticism and queer emancipation meet in a claustrophobic monster-romance about divinity, sexuality, and freedom. When Diego López is guilted by his mother into taking a low-key construction job in New Mexico, he doesn’t expect to be the only helping hand at Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. But the church is abandoned, decrepit, and off the beaten path, and the only other person for miles is its handsome caretaker, Ariel Azevedo. Together, Diego and Ariel refurbish the old church, sharing stories of their heritage, experiences, and desires. But as the long days turn into longer nights, Diego begins to see past Ariel’s human mirage and finds himself falling into lust—and maybe something else—with one of God’s first creations.

heyy so I loved ur book so much and was just wondering if you recommend anything similar? Cannot wait for the sequel btw<3
Aaaaaa thank you for reading!!! I'm happy u enjoyed <3
I've gotten this question a couple times, and it always stresses me out because I remember struggling to make comparisons when I was still querying for traditional publishing. But, I think it really depends on what you liked about ABM!
If it's the queer love story that's lyrical/dreamy/pretty, I'd recommend the obvious: The Song of Achilles. But also Solomon's Crown, which comps TSOA, came out a few days ago and I've heard good things! I also love Maurice and The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Call Me By Your Name is problematic, but I guess it's similar. If you're interested in movies, I've heard Portrait of a Lady on Fire has similar vibes to ABM, and I'm a huge fan of The Handmaiden.
The queerness and ridiculous writing style and tragic ending? The biggest inspo in ABM's style is The Place Without Limits by Jose Donoso and The Kiss of the Spider-woman by Manuel Puig. (The latter one is my favorite book ever)
Do you like the queer Christian mysticism? Well, @freydismoon just released Heart, Haunt, Havoc! And not to be funny but, well, Paradise Lost and William Blake's work is definitely an option aha.
Do you like the Christian trauma and trans/queer anger? It's YA but Hell Followed With Us! I haven't read it myself (yet) but I've heard incredible things.
Do you like the queerness and surrealism and trauma? The most influential piece of media for me is the movie Funeral Parade of Roses, which is about a transwoman in late-60s Japan.
And if you want more from me in specific, I have a little short story linked in my bio! It's E-rated and about two dudes in the Classical Maya period being gay sksjsddf
I hope this list is helpful! :') <33
“I could worship you,” Ariel whispered raggedly.
“I would let you,” Diego said. “Stay with me. Stay, little coyote,” he said, breathing hard.
“You’ll be safe.” Diego surged forward and sealed their mouths together.
“Because you’ll keep me.” He quite liked the idea of being kept.
“Because you’re mine,” Ariel rumbled.

My cat has to wear a cone this week and it made me think of an angel whose halo is a cone.
Local idiot is cone-free and back on his regular sillyzone nonsense.
I am obsessed with the theological implications of this
