Announcing a new show... David Downs, opening on Feb. 5th from 6-10pm! Artist Statement I recently found it necessary to reduce the imagery in my paintings to ambiguous forms, or soft fields of color and light. I began painting complete abstraction because I felt objects and people, that are easy to identify and associate with, would too often usurp the meaning of a work. I’m not interested in glorifying a particular thing, or promoting a process, or demonstrate painterly skill; just expressing “basic human emotions,” as once described by Mark Rothko, through the relationships of color and placement. I see my recent works as an exploration of feelings rather than a statement about them. Friday Night Wall presents: Spencer Hutchinson The Friday Night Wall is back this October with Chicago based artist Spencer Hutchinson and the first public viewing of his installation ‘Land Bridge’. During the height of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade (from roughly the mid 17th through the early 19th centuries), peoples native to the African regions known today as Sierra Leone, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia, the Ivory Coast and Benin attempting to escape from the Muslim, European and Indigenous kidnappers, would flee from their homes carrying with them handmade ladders used for day-to-day activities. Those who were unable to escape were put in chains, and frequently had their worldly goods, including the very ladders used to aid in their escape, taken from them where today they are auctioned off to western museums and private collections. The title 'Land Bridge' suggests the idea of constructing a permeable border between the African and American continents as an act of Reparations intended to honor the legacy of past attempts at social mobility on the part of African descendants living in America. The installation, which is comprised of ladders of various sizes, constructions, and states of usability, also alludes to the personal narratives of African-Americans attempting to forge a cultural identity in a perennially hostile environment. January 23rd, 2015 – Octavia Carney

  Octavia Carney (b.1984, Atlanta, Georgia) lives and works in Chicago. She earned her BFA with a Liberal Arts Thesis from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She works sculpturally interrogating contemporary social constructions, through de/reconstructing both organic and mass-produced objects, revealing the change in meaning from material evolution. 3D scanning and printing processes represent the current unflinching consumerist desire toward rapid technological advancement. In her work, the 3D printed output is layered within analog processes, such as mold-making and lost wax casting, serving as a sobering lens through which to further scrutinize cutting-edge desirability. While the everyday cacophony of commercialized images and language can prove to be experientially estranging, her work offers the viewer a more intimate and critical perspective of a familiar object.

Ms. Carney has previously shown work at Sideshow Gallery and Women Made in Chicago.

We are publically accessible by the CTA Damen blue line El stop, as well as handicapped accessible by bus routes #56 Milwaukee, #72 North and #50 Damen and building elevator.

Art will hang from 7-10pm every Friday Evening.

December 5th, 2014 – Daliah Ammar

  Daliah Ammar is a nineteen-year-old Palestinian-American artist based in Chicago, IL. Daliah is currently earning her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The purpose of Daliah’s work is to transcend the notion of the self and the physicality of paint, resonating from her own vulnerable and personal experiences – as a means of conveying life as it blooms and decays from within. Expressing that awareness of the self and reflecting to the viewer establishes a relationship between themselves and herself. Daliah’s works are confrontational, yet, intimate and personal – using the painted surface as a trope for the physical and psychological presence between the inner self and external viewer.
