Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors and remembers the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This holiday began as Decoration Day, celebrated on May 30, 1868. One hundred years later, in 1968, Congress moved it to the last Monday of the month, and in 1971, it became known as Memorial Day. Many people observe a moment of silence at 3 PM local time to remember those who sacrificed their lives for their country.
In honor of this occasion, we are showcasing War Songs, for Anniversaries and Gatherings of Soldiers, to which is added a selection of songs and hymns for Memorial Day. This songbook was published in 1883 by Oliver Ditson and Company of Boston, a well-known music publishing house of that era. The collection was specifically curated for veterans' events and Memorial Day observances and was dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic. The G.A.R. was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 that brought together Union Army, Navy, and Marine Corps veterans who served during the Civil War. It was one of the most powerful and influential veterans’ organizations in U.S. history, playing a major role in shaping post-war American society and politics.
Memorial Day weekend is often regarded as the unofficial start of summer in the U.S., leading to various recreational activities, barbecues, and outdoor events.
Our copy comes from our Philip J. Hohlweck Civil War Collection.

Grieve AND organize.
Good article by David Hunter on how to survive the Trump presidency, both on the personal and on the political plane.
The key to taking effective action if Trump wins is to avoid perpetuating his goals of fear, isolation, exhaustion and disorientation.
This is an excellent article. It talks about the psychology of tyranny, the history of resistance and the paths we have to take to rescue each other and recover.
