Come to the LIbrary for a workshop on comics and comics making by Vulpes ( a baller artist and NOCAZ organizer) and free comics! About Vulpes I am an illustrator, printmaker and muralist living in New Orleans, LA and a member of the Friends of Ibn Firnas collective. In 2013, I graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in General Fine Arts. For more than five years, I have been self-publishing comics and have painted murals around the US and several countries in Europe. When I’m not drawing, I am following the Montreal Canadiens and the New Orleans Pelicans or sitting on the levee by the Mississippi.
Remembering the Easter Rising, 100 years later
This week is the 100th anniversary of Ireland’s Easter rising. Let’s remember those women who fought against foreign and domestic oppression.
Elizabeth O’Farrell was a nurse, a feminist, a republican who faced down British guns alone to deliver the rebels’ surrender. Her role was later diminished: a famous photograph of the event shows only her boots. Even they were erased in later printings of the photo.
Let’s imagine for a second the deafening cannons finally silent. Let’s imagine the determined clip of boots on cobblestones, and out of the smoke, Elizabeth O’Farrell. She crosses O'Connell street, marching up to the British officers. This week, 100 years ago, Elizabeth O’Farrell carried surrender in her hand, but a new world in her heart.
