Diversity Project Awardees!

The State Friends of Mississippi Libraries, Inc. are happy to announce the libraries that will be receiving a set of books courtesy of the “Diversity Books for Mississippi Libraries Project”. The State Friends will provide a collection of 10 books that highlight diversity to these (4) Mississippi public libraries with supporting Friends of the Library groups. Titles are selected by each individual library to meet their unique service needs. Friends of the Library groups have committed to hosting at least one program or initiative geared towards promoting diversity for their local library. I want to thank all the applicants, and the state Friends for supporting the project. Congratulations!

Continue the Fight for Libraries!

Thousands of librarians, library supporters, users, vendors and citizens in every Congressional district in the country used the ALA Legislative Action Center and many other channels to insist that their Representative in the House sign two “Dear Appropriator” letters to the Appropriations Committee asking them to preserve funding this year for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program. One-third of the entire House of Representatives (from both parties) signed each of those Dear Appropriator letters and nearly 170 Members signed at least one — an 18% increase in support for IAL and a record-shattering 64% increase for LSTA. We still need your help:

Margaret Murray Grant 2017 Awardees!

The Friends of Mississippi Libraries Inc. is pleased to announce the recipients for the 2017 Margaret Murray Grants. Each library will receive $500 for their project, along with a cash match provided by their local Friends of the Library organization.

There were 18 applications this year and these applications were more competitive than expected. Thus, the state Friends of Mississippi Libraries Inc. provided a partial grant to a 4th Friends group who were only fractions of a point away from being awarded a full grant. Please join me in congratulating these Friends groups!

These are the groups and projects awarded for 2017:

Friends of the Pass     Christian Library:     “100 Books Before High school” Literary Program. Promotes reading for fun     to school age youth, for every 25 books read a prize is won and at the     100th books a free book is awarded. Funds will be used to purchase prizes,     award books, and program supplies.

Friends of Pontotoc     County Library:     Purchase new children’s non-fiction animal books for the library     collection in conjuncture with “Animal Tales” an educational program with     live animals to be held in the library.  

Friends of Lexington     Public Library:     Purchase 2017 ALA award winning books to increase local access to high     quality materials on school reading lists.

Friends of Stone County     Libraries:     Purchase 5 sets of books for the MS Bicentennial Celebration. “15 Great     Books for MS Kids” will serve as the initial list of books for     Bicentennial Book Club meetings.

Better World Books is looking for libraries with “Game Changing” ideas which help advance a compelling literacy project.

Better World Books is looking for libraries with “Game Changing” ideas which help advance a compelling literacy project.

Think Differently. Be Creative. Be a Game Changer. Thanks to thousands of libraries who participate in the Better World Books Discards and Donations program, we are able to offer library grants for the seventh consecutive year.

The needs and opportunities of the communities libraries serve vary widely and there are countless worthy projects to support. This grant process is intended to solicit a wide range of applications that reflect this diversity.

$50,000 in funding is available; maximum grant amount per project is $15,000. Library grants are open to libraries located in the US and Canada. Interested libraries can fill out the online application form. All applications are due by March 31st at 4pm ET.
