Art tutorial: Lighting (Art Reference)
Lighting Hot Takes:
- I don't think pillow shading is inherently bad. I sometimes use them to add an early form of depth and dimension to my base colour. However, I agree that usina pillow shading as the only form of shading or light work can make the drawings look flat and uneven.
- I usually use pillow shading as initial base, then build up the lighting and define dark and bright colours from source of light
- I don't like the "don't use muddy colours" advice. Muddy colours are a transition from dark to light. Depending of the type of atmosphere or vibe that you want to draw, sometimes muddy colours (if done right) can accentuate certain emotions and strengthen storytelling in art.
