Taking a moment today to delve into something that some s-types don’t understand and a majority of D-types haven’t realized yet: *its lonely on top.*
The left side of the slash is a place of control, you get to implement rules and protocols, sling rope, spank, choke and fuck but guess what?
*No one is showing us how be good dominants.*
D-types make the rules, we enforce them, we deal with the backlash - the uproar - the “fuck, I’m not doing that.” It is a responsibility we take on willingly and the majority of the time its picking up the pieces, gluing them back together and rebuilding. If we stumble - and let’s face it we are human - the majority of the time we have only ourselves to turn to and when you’re new and have a limited knowledge base that makes the task of being a good dominant nearly impossible. It becomes discouraging - you become defeated - your submissive doesn’t understand why as a 19 year old master you don’t have all the answers and why tumblr lied to her! You start to doubt yourself, ask whether or not kink is for you, feel like trying vanilla dating again… You turn your nose up at that idea then use fetlife as a hookup site - what is this POF - and realize that while casual kinky sex is fun its not what you’re seeking.
Being a d-type is difficult, it can be lonely and the d-type community isn’t the most welcoming. You spend a majority of your time with a book, browsing fetlife or any other website searching for answers, you scour the community searching for a mentor who actually has the time for you let alone cares about your growth.
So what then? What do you do? *Put in the work* - go to munches, classes, workshops and parties. Don’t settle - find a partner who understands the level of responsibility you’ve taken on and see that they are patient with you. Be with someone who wants to learn and explore with you, who wants to share this community with you and make you a better dominant.

Dominants require nurturing and understanding too. No one is born knowing how to be “The Best Dominant Ever” – it takes practice and learning that is at times less accessible than it is for the other side of the slash.
As in all things, always seek knowledge and be honest about your experience level. Don’t go charging in at 19 calling yourself Master if you don’t yet possess Mastery. It will save you a lot of heartache and incompitable partners that cannot teach you what you have not yet learned. Even if it seems scary admitting you don’t know something, that is a sign of a true Dominant. Leaders admit where they lack knowledge.
