i think an interesting thing that gets frequently overlooked in discussions about historical gender and sexual deviance is that our current concept of sexual identity being a separate thing from gender identity is very very new. obviously it differs a ton between cultures and time periods but less than a century ago in the west the prevailing discourse around same-sex attraction was the concept of sexual inversion, which framed homosexuality as a given person being born exhibiting traits of the ‘opposite’ gender to varying degrees. attraction to women was seen as an inherently male behavior, and vice versa, so there was no way to understand same-sex attraction without gendering these people outside of the binary

obviously inversion theory is complete bullshit for a lot of reasons. but i do think modern lgbt discourse would benefit from a renewed understanding that the lingering cultural distaste towards gay people has very little to do with sexual identity and very much to do with gender identity.
