女俠 Nüxia: [Chinese] female knight-errant. Literary trope/ sub-genre that first emerged during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). She is an independent vigilante and skilled with a sword, roaming freely on horseback, dedicated to fighting injustices. "Refuses to be contained in the inner sphere (nei) and insists on fulfilling an active outer role" (R. Altenburger, The Sword or the Needle, p.33). "[Knights were regarded as] …Supermoral, transgressive, and anti-authoritarian" (K. Tsai). Nüxia paradoxically uphold the existing social order while simultaneously defying and challenging it.
