I should lock the fuck in *half an hour passes* I should lock the fuck in *half an hour passes* I should lock the fuck in *half an hour passes* I should-
You can dress it up in all the progressive language you want but “the reason people are mentally ill/unhappy is because Modern Society is too individualistic and secular, we need to return to traditional values, family, and spirituality’ is always going to be reactionary conservative bullshit and I’m not going to extend a single ounce of trust or good faith to anyone arguing otherwise.
Anyway, the real risk of generative AI is how it furthers a climate where the signal of fact is increasingly lost in the noise of bullshit.
i mean i think having dignity is similar to a negative freedom, it's something that people can only take away from you.
this places dignity as basically the freedom from humiliation, which to me seems like the clear opposite force.
The politics of humiliation has moved to the center of the reactionary project under Trump II.
Amazing point and here is an essay building on those ideas of dignity as the freedom from humiliation and how we need to cultivate that freedom more than ever
refusing to apply first aid to the wound because "it shouldn't have happened in the first place, so what we really should be doing is making sure no one gets stabbed ever again"
"Racialised" is much better than PoC but I've been leaning a lot on the concept of racial markedness. Because that allows us to make statements like "the name Jamal is racially marked in USA". Rather than saying something like "Jamal is a PoC name", a nonsense statement, saying it's racially marked in USA allows us to contrast with societies like Albania or the Arab countries where the name Jamal is ordinary, thus unmarked.
It's a concept I've kind of imported from linguistic analysis; saying a speech pattern is more or less marked does not really allow us to avoid the subject of who's doing the marking. A statement like "womens' speech is more marked in Lakota" necessitates that we understand that it's the Lakota who are marking womens' speech. A foreigner can't tell the difference and probably doesn't understand why it would thus be weird to see a man using speech patterns associated with women, in the same way an Albanian wouldn't understand why USA people would think Jamal is a Black name.
i’m greatly enjoying left hand of darkness but you have to admit it loses some shock value if you’re at all familiar with / have had even the most rudimentary exposure to tumblr. ‘the king is pregnant’ yeah people on tumblr routinely talk about roman senator cicero being pregnant. i’m used to it.
Sometimes I try to explain a Star Trek plot to my friends, like the Fuck Or Die episode or the one where some aliens abduct Kirk, Uhura, and Chekov and put shock collars on them and force them to be gladiators, and they say "haha that sounds like fanfiction." And while it makes sense that a modern audience would react that way, I think it's kind of getting it backwards. A lot of the tropes that we recognize as characteristic to fanfiction today developed in large part because of Star Trek. The zines the Kirk/Spock shippers were passing around at conventions in the 70s and 80s are the direct ancestors of Ao3. Star Trek isn't written like fanfiction, fanfiction is written like Star Trek.
What actually is the point of tying paracetamol/tylenol to autism? Why even is the US government doing that? What do they - or someone else - gain from that? Because I have no idea where that came from.
It's like Lysenkoism was for Stalinism, a vaguely politically aligned pseudoscience of a guy that was in good with the people at the top. They suppressed all of genetics for its sake. RFK got given power not because his ideas are popular or that helpful to the fascists but because he dropped out to boost Trump. They support this idea because they support him, oppose "woke" scientists and the general medical status quo, and reactionary christianity is generally amenable to the idea of women choosing to suffer (especially "for the sake of their children") being a moral good
I believe in the separation of church (fandom) and state (media creators)
I know he is not a canon character but: Sotero Lestrange?
How I feel about this character
I appreciate my readers' willingness to get invested in my random OCs, lol! He's an interesting one because he's somebody who's massively politically shaped by where I put his upbringing and that's varied wildly across the two AUs I've written where he appears (brilliant difficulty and champion au respectively, although he's incidentally mentioned in all of this can be broken).
All the people I ship romantically with this character
I wrote him and Hermione together as part of brilliant difficulty but wouldn't say I ship it, per se.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
I kind of wish I'd featured more of him and his little sister Amaryllis/Marie (in most continuities) - they have a very close sibling relationship that just hasn't really come up much.
My unpopular opinion about this character
Uuuh don't think this one applies to my own OC.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Likewise N/A
Wondering why you don't ship them if you wrote them together?
Heres the thing when Rs shut down the govt bc they refuse to feed starving children and help low income families, that's fucking BAD.
When Ds "shut down" R-controlled federal government in order to stop Rs from snatching away trans rights and people off the streets oh and also their favorite thing which is food from the mouths of starving children, its actually based and cool and awesome and they should do it more and harder
Also unions are totally morally neutral they are not good or bad what they do is vigorously protect their workers which can be good or it can be bad it can prevent you from being unreasonably fired or it can form a wall of silence to protect bad cops or the longshoremen can throttle the US economy to try to make Joe Biden look bad to try to help Donald Trump become president which is a real thing that happened that everybody just forgot about
I don't think it's possible to overstate the degree to which every mass liberatory movement in the US has failed because of racism. Like there really cannot be functional working class unity until we figure out how to systematically liquidate all forms of white chauvinism in progressive organizations
i would add antiblackness specifically
It is always at least anti blackness. Half the time it also includes the current demonized immigrant group of the moment (Latine, Chinese, wrong kind of European, etc) though
