Regan’s next actions were purely instinctive. She shoved the stranger away, momentarily believing him to be a threat. Once realizing he had only asked her if she were okay, she calmed down slightly.
“Sorry I just-I have to get out of here.” Her paranoia and anxiety had made her go into survival mode. She refused to allow her father to get his claws back on her again. Her gaze continuously flickered from the stranger back to her father, waiting and ready to attack the bastard if necessary.
“He’s going to get me.” She had said those same words back in Genosha when she was just a young teenager and trying to run away. She didn’t quite realize what she said and the implications that could come with her words.
There was an appropriate time to ask questions, and standing here while the poor thing was clearly distressed and wanting to get away was most certainly not that moment. Sehun simply nodded in understanding, not speaking as he pressed his fingertips against the woman’s back, urging her to turn and walk in the opposite direction again. Once she’d started, he moved his hand away so as to not overstep his bounds, but he did keep close to her, occasionally looking over his shoulder to see if there was a man blatantly following them.
There was.
Leaning his head closer to the girl’s ear as they walked, Sehun spoke in a low, soft tone. “Who is he?” The information may or may not be helpful in shaking the man, but Sehun figured it was worth a shot. Anyway, he was committed to helping this girl either way.

This wasn’t supposed to happen…he was supposed to be dead. She was supposed to never have to deal with him ever again. She was never supposed to see him again.
Yet there he stood, eyeing her with complete disgust. The excuse of a man stood right before her, his tattered state just as she had remembered. Her mouth open to speak but all that escaped had been a pathetic sob. She prayed that this had been a trick her mind had been playing on her and she wasn’t experiencing the same thing others in the news had recently.
This wasn’t real…it couldn’t be. She had buried her old demons right beside the bastard. Of course her old demons had come back with a vengeance in the form of the monster she had now become.
“Dad…” Her voice broke, showing the hurt she felt in that moment. He reached put to grab her but Regan instinctively backed away, remembering all too well how painful his touch could be. He mouthed something to her but she couldn’t hear it, her heart pounding against her chest prevented the wprds from reaching her ears.
Once he stepped forward Regan bolted. As she ran down the block she bumped and rushed passed other pedestrians. Without thinking rationally she ran right into the street, pissing off more than a few drivers. When one car had nearly hit her, she stopped it using her new abilities, and ran off again. It wasn’t until she collided with someone that she stopped running.
The smell of hundreds of used books had always reminded Sehun of him. It’s why he spent an large amount of time in secondhand bookstores that was not at all proportionate to the number of books he actually purchased. It would have been unbearable three years ago, but now? Now it was soothing. Tracing the tips of his fingers over the bindings as he walked down an isle, Sehun was ripped from his reverie by some shouts and the sound of screeching tired coming from outside. He started, weaving his way quickly through the stacks of literature to rush out of the shop, the sound of blaring horns meeting his ears. Bursting through the door and whipping his head to the left to see what he could, he barely had time to react as a blonde haired girl crashed into him.
Thankfully he didn’t go down, kicking one foot back to catch himself as he instinctively grabbed onto her, making sure she didn’t fall either. Perhaps the result of being in such close quarters with the X-Men all the time, Sehun twisted to put himself between the girl and whatever she was running from, despite not seeing anything visibly out of the ordinary. After taking a moment to assess their surroundings and decide that there wasn’t any immediate danger, Sehun turned his head to look at her. “Are you alright?” he inquired, genuinely concerned.
Julio chuckled and shook his head when the other said that he certainly hope so. “What’s wrong old man? Afraid of me?” He teased the other with a goofy grin.
He listened to the man’s words and nodded his head. “The virus did seem to bring a lot of us together…Because we all had a common enemy for once.” Julio knew that this ‘war’ in the mutant community was about whether humans should be their equals or inferiors. Julio personally couldn’t think of one time in history where enslaving a population had ended up well.
“I’ve heard of him, but I’ve never seen him,” Julio mentioned. Most people at Xavier’s saw him as a bully and a traitor, and from what Julio heard he sounds like just the type of guy that Julio would want to clobber. He was thankful that he wasn’t around at the same time Pyro was there.
“Really?” He was surprised. The Pyro the kids talked about wouldn’t help anyone unless there was something in it for him. “Must have been an off day…” Julio chuckled as he looked at the other. “Hopefully something smaller can happen that brings us together…Although I doubt that will ever happen.” He sighed.
“Oh, it was certainly an off day,” Sehun laughed, shaking his head. “More of an off week, really. He caught the virus, and it was killing him, fast.” There was a pause, Sehun’s lower lip pinched between his teeth as he pondered his choice of words. “He... he came to me, and asked me to take care of his will for him. To scatter his ashes. To... watch over Bobby for him.” Sehun’s gaze darkened and he took solace in his drink, keeping his eyes fixated on the bar as he set the glass back down. “I don’t know why, but I couldn’t just sit there and let my worst enemy--the guy I hated the most and who hated me the most--accept his own death. It freaked me out, I think. Even though I always used to fantasize about what it’d be like if he were gone, how much easier my life would be, I couldn’t face that reality. I couldn’t. So I didn’t. I said some things to him, some things I knew would make him want to fight, to hold on just long enough for the cure... and wouldn’t you know it? The bastard pulled through.”
Sehun lifted his head to look at Julio, his expression a mixture of bitterness and doubt. “I wonder every day why I felt that way... and why a larger amount of other people don’t. Every day, humans and mutants are murdered because of the differences in their genetic code. Every day humanity proves itself to have devolved to a state of chaos lower than the primal hierarchy found in nature... I just don’t know what’s right anymore.” Well, this had taken a dark turn. In an attempt to lighten the mood, Sehun gave a tired shrug of his shoulders and a weak, breathy laugh. “I suppose I’m just looking for answers to a question that has none, huh? Sorry. Didn’t mean to unload that onto you, Julio.”
Julio could tell that the other felt awkward after he asked if everything was alright. Still, he felt like it was important that the other knew that he could always talk to him. Julio wanted to be there for his friends whenever he could be. “If you’re sure,” He said with a smile when the other shook his head. “I’m not oging to beat it out of you or anything,” He laughed.
The dark skinned boy nodded his head as he heard the other talk about the virus. “I’m not a medical major, but the virus just doesn’t seem…Natural. Like normally when a virus or something mutates it shows symptoms, right? This seemed to happen over night. It just seems to man made for me,” Julio said with a shrug of his shoulders.
The boy sighed as he took a sip of his drink, relaxing at the familiar taste. “I know how you mean, man,” Julio said with a shake of his head. “All this drama with mutants isn’t making me feel comfortable…But surely we’re just over reacting. Right?” Julio wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince Sehun, or himself.
“I certainly hope so,” Sehun agreed with a weary smile, looking down into his drink for a few moments before speaking again.
“It’s funny, though, how something that seemed so hellbent on driving us apart had opposite consequences... in some cases, anyway.” His forced smirk became a little more genuine as he recalled his time spent on Genosha during the outbreak.
“You remember Pyro, yes?” Hell, even if he’d never met the guy, it wasn’t odd to hear students talking about him. Given the short time that Julio found himself at Xavier’s school, Sehun would’ve been surprised to learn that the younger mutant had never heard of Magneto’s right-hand man, since everyone seemed to have an opinion about him.
“Real asshole, made my life hell for years. Hated the guy. Well, during that outbreak I ended up spending some quality time with him on Genosha, taking care of a young pregnant mutant...” Sehun’s voice trailed and he shook his head, looking to the ceiling and smiling. “It sounds terrible, but sometimes a near-death experience is what it takes to rebuild burned bridges. So, hey, I guess one good thing came out of it.”
Julio laughed when the other asked how he could forget about the Bro Code. “I’ve heard you been out of it, so I won’t be too rough with you tonight,” He teased the other man with a cheeky grin. Julio chuckled and shook his head. “I’ve never picked up a book that has had the use for that word.” Julio grinned.
Things took a rather sobering turn when the other said that they’ve been having a lot of trouble lately. Julio sighed and nodded his head. “Anything you want to talk about?” Julio wasn’t sure if he was talking about just things in general, or if something a bit more personal to him. “It might be better talking to someone you don’t practically live with.” Julio joked.
Julio followed after the other as he ducked inside and saw the man shake off his coat. The pair ended up sitting at a quiet end for them and was approached bu the bartender. “Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey please,” Julio said and the Bartender walked away. “It seems…Odd. I mean not only that, but all the activity happening around. It’s almost as if people are getting more and more restless.”
When Julio asked if Sehun wanted to talk about something, the man had just pursed his lips and lowered his eyes, instead filling the silence with a short cough as he shook his head. Then he’d spotted the bar, and was all the happier for it: he wasn’t good at talking about the things that bothered him.
Sitting inside, Sehun nodded in response to Julio’s observation, releasing a tired sigh. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the virus was an attempt to either wipe out the mutant population or turn it on itself, therein producing the same outcome... and now, with all these attacks happening on the streets, so often involving mutants...” The professor paused as the bartender set their drinks in front of them, fishing out his debit card and sliding it toward them. “Keep it open, please. Thanks.”
Sipping his drink, Sehun’s shoulders sagged as he thought on the current state of things. “I don’t know about you, Julio, but I’ve got this feeling of impending doom looming on the horizon that I just can’t shake.” He released a breathy laugh, forced and betraying his deep concern as he locked eyes with the young man. “Then again, I think I’ve always felt that way, since trouble seems to find me so easily.”
Julio laughed and nodded his head. “Of course man. Haven’t you ever read the Bro Code?” Julio asked with a big grin. “ ‘The older bro shall pay for the younger bro’s beer unless the bro is named Julio in which case Julio never has to pay for his own beers.’ It’s like a law of physics, man.” He joked with a dorky grin on his face.
“Whippersnapper?” Julio asked with a raised eyebrow and chuckled. He followed after the other as they started walking. “Where the hell did you come up with that nickname?” He asked curiously with a grin on his face. Julio put his hands in the pockets of his hoodie as they walked. He wasn’t sensitive to the coldness, in fact, he liked being cold. One could always put more clothes on than off…Well, depending on where they’re at.
He was brought out of his silly musings by the other man’s words. Julio chuckled and shook his head. “It’s okay man. I’ve mostly been getting ready to start at the University. Things are getting exciting now that I’m about halfway through with my first major,” Of course, Julio still had a longs way to go but he liked to look at the glass half full. “And no trouble more than usual,” Of course that didn’t mean much.
“Right, of course. The Bro Code. How could I forget?” Sehun wore an amused expression, keeping his gaze down on his feet as they walked. “I didn’t come up with it, dork. It’s from, like, the seventeenth century. Pick up a book once in a while, god,” he teased, chuckling lightly at his own joke.
Once Julio had assured him that he wasn’t causing any more shenanigans than normal, Sehun turned his head to look at him. “Well, good. God knows there’s been trouble enough for all of us lately...” His voice trailed slightly, and before he could get that distant, vague look in his eyes, he shook his head and focused on locating the pub he’d walked by earlier. Ah, there it was.
Ducking inside and out of the cold, Sehun took off his coat and shook away the few snowflakes that still clung to it, probably of his own creation. Leading Julio to the bar, the man picked out a quiet end for them to sit at. The bartender, not particularly busy given how quiet the pub was at this hour, immediately approached them. “I’ll have an old fashioned,” Sehun said before nodding his head at Julio. After the student had ordered, Sehun relaxed in his chair, turning it slightly so it faced him a touch more. “I’m interested to hear what you’ve thought of everything happening lately, actually. You needn’t bother getting into the meat of the politics, but... what was your reaction to the virus, things like that?”
Julio was lost in his thoughts, hence, why he didn’t notice the other until he spoke. Julio was trying to recall some of the bars around the area and where they were. Julio supposed he could look on his phone, but he hated wasting data when he could need it later on down the road. Perhaps he should just walk and see what he comes across? He was about to do just that when he heard a voice talking to him.
“Sehun!” Julio said with a friendly smile on his face. Julio had taken a few of the man’s classes when he had been at Xavier’s school and had thought about being a mechanic major before realizing that he didn’t feel any drive behind it. But the teacher was a pretty chill man, and even after he graduated Julio would talk to him if they ever met up in a group meeting or something. Julio did like to visit the mansion from time to time, after all.
“I was just about to go to a bar anyways,” Julio said with a grin. “And you’re night that old. Although you are old enough to be buying both of our drinks.” Julio joked with a cheeky grin on his face. Julio liked to joke around with the man when he could get away with it.
A light snort could be heard as Sehun dipped his head in a nod, the bridge of his nose scrunched as he lifted it again. “Eight years gets you free alcohol? Ah, alright. I can splurge.” Julio was a student after all; Sehun remembered not having much money to his name when he was in college, either. It was the least he could do.
Shoving his hands in the pockets of his pea coat, Sehun jerked his head in the direction he’d come from. “Come on then, whippersnapper. It’s cold out here and my frail bones can’t take it.” Truth be told, he hardly felt the cold thanks to his mutation, but it was easier to dress for the weather rather than explain time and time again why he was in a short-sleeved shirt in the snow.
“Long time no see, Julio,” Sehun started. “Probably mostly on account of myown absence, but, eh… how’ve you been? Not causing any trouble at school, I hope.” His words were matched with a cheeky half-smile, that very expectant, professor-esque stare meeting Julio’s gaze as he looked down at the slightly shorter individual.
It feels like it’s been forever…
Julio wasn’t exactly a huge fan of school. It was boring and mind numbing, and half the stuff they taught he felt like he would never need to learn. What he needed to learn was how to use his powers in more inventive ways to help the world, not mosey along the same halls for three months hoping that the world will learn to accept them.
Julio sighed as he got out of the taxi that had driven him from the Empire State University. With classes getting ready to start again, he wanted to spend as much time away from it as possible. The only class that he could honestly say that he liked was any classes involving computers and coding.
The young man paid the taxi driver, making sure to leave a decent tip, before they parted ways. “Hm…What to do now?” He mumbled to himself as he looked around.
He’d fallen into a vegetative state: while still able to function normally and complete tasks necessary to his own continuity, his head had been vacated. Life, it seemed as of late, had taken a bit of a turn. Suffered a bit of a nosedive, if you will. The thirty year old felt like it was spiraling out of his control, and in an effort to spare himself the sadness he’d once succumbed to, Sehun simply turned it off. He went about his days, showing up at the garage only to shut himself away and work alone. Thankfully the students at Xavier’s school were on break, so he didn’t have to worry about that just yet, either. Eventually, though, he stopped showing up at the garage. When asked about his absence--as he made his own schedule anyway--Sehun said he needed some time off. Paid or unpaid, he didn’t care at this point. He just couldn’t bring himself to leave his apartment in the city anymore. There was no point. Nothing brought him joy.
The holidays are over. I’ll have to be getting back to work soon. Back to teaching. Back to living.
Sounded exhausting. But, it might do him some good to get out, to try and re-acclimate to that funny little thing called human interaction.
Walking through the city, stopping in shops here and there and trying very hard to force himself to be happier, Sehun found it immeasurably difficult. That is, until he saw a familiar face. Then there was a mixture of panic and excitement, because this might actually be someone he could hold a conversation with.
Maybe.
He didn’t know Julio terribly well; they’d met before, sure. They’d been in the same company numerous times, though Sehun couldn’t recall ever really talking to the young man one-on-one. Still though, it was a start. At least this was someone he could tolerate.
“Accompany an old man to get a drink,” Sehun responded after hearing what Julio had muttered to himself, wearing a smirk. “So he doesn’t have to get one alone and feel weird and sad about it.”

Sadie didn’t look away from the Zetanbren as he considered her words. She allowed a small smirk that gave the illusion of far more confidence than she felt slip onto her face. Fuck, she hoped she didn’t die trying to save some stranger from getting turned inside out. After all the shit she’d been through, that’d just be embarrassing.
Lucky for her – and no-longer-in-immediate-danger-of-being-murdered guy – the Zetanbrens seemed about as dumb as they were big. They didn’t want to break any rules and risk getting thrown on their asses, she guessed, which worked just fine for her. Sadie kept her eyes on them as they left, looking away only when her new companion spoke.
“You’re the one that pissed them off,” she pointed out, raising an eyebrow. “Can you really insult anyone’s intelligence after that? I mean, you did catch the part where they’re nine feet tall, right?” She snorted, glancing back to the aliens’ retreating forms. They’d nearly vanished now, and she finally felt some relief. They probably weren’t planning on doubling around and killing her, then.
Satisfied that they were gone, she turned back to the stranger. “I’d say no problem, but I think you owe me one. The inside of your head probably isn’t the best last sight. How exactly did you piss those guys off, anyways?”
Sehun just shrugged, turning his head to watch the beasts lumber off. “They insulted me, so I insulted them back. And they are moronic, thank you. Statistically the least-intelligent species in the known galaxy... ugly, too.” A tiny smirk lifted the corners of his mouth as he folded his arms across his chest.
It wasn’t that he was brave, he just lacked any sort of filter. This wasn’t the first time it had gotten him in trouble, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. He was sick of this station. Sick of staring out at the vast, starry darkness from behind a veil of false security, as it were. ‘Humans are safer in groups’, they said. ‘Humans should remain in colonies; traveling into deep space is neither wise nor conducive to a long lifespan’.
“I’m... Kim. Just call me Kim,” Sehun said with a tired sigh, extending one hand to shake his rescuer’s. “I work in the labs... trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in this forsaken hunk of junk station. Mostly I make body augmentations for humans that keep us from dying from the littlest head cold,” he added sarcastically. “We’re hardly meant for life in the black.” He regarded his companion quizzically, head tilting to the right. “Were you born here, or did you travel?”
[text]: heya! Just an update, I'm heading in to be induced right now. I'll keep you updated <3
[text]: I hope everything goes well, sweetheart. Let me know when you and the little girl are ready for visitors!
Andromeda Station || Space Colony AU
Sadie had found, through the years, that everyone who found themselves out in the black had a different reason for leaving their home planet. For some people, adventure was in their blood, and tying them down to one world would simply be cruel. For others, there was nothing on their birth planet that could qualify it as a home. There were also, of course, those who were born in the black and destined to die there. Sadie figured she didn’t fit into any of the categories.
She’d always known she wasn’t going to stay on the planet she’d been born on. It was a poor world, and everyone who could get out did it as soon as possible. The soil wasn’t good for anything, and the people who lived there survived on rations alone. She’d hated it for as long as she could remember. There were some reasons to stay of course; while her two oldest brothers generally wanted nothing to do with her, Chris, who was only two years older than her, had always had her back. He’d been her best friend growing up, and she liked to think that, if she’d gotten the chance, she would have gotten him out, too.
The thing was, she hadn’t gotten the chance.
She’d started pretty young, like a lot of thieves did. That had been out of necessity. There wasn’t much to steal on her barren world, so if you wanted to build up any kind of wealth, you had to build for a long time. Taking from the people on top, the ones getting ready to leave themselves, and the occasional bigwig coming by in search of cheap land or cheap labor. By the time she was twenty, Sadie had nearly enough to get herself and her brother off their hellhole of a planet and to the nearest space station. Then, she’d fucked up and stolen from the wrong person. She hadn’t had time to go back for Chris and, knowing that her most recent victim would kill her if he got his hands on her, fled on her own. Without Chris, the stolen credits took her twice as far, and she managed to make something of herself on Andromeda Station.
Every day, she dreamed about going back for her brother, but she never knew if anyone was still looking for her back home, and getting herself killed wasn’t going to get him off the planet. She always told herself she’d go back someday, but now seven years had passed, and she was still living comfortably on Andromeda. She’d never contacted her family, never commed Chris. They probably didn’t even think she was alive. She told herself that was fine by her, but there was an ache in her chest that was hard to ignore.
Maybe that was why she paused walking home when she saw a guy who was definitely about to get his ass kicked. He looked a few years older than her, probably about Chris’s age, and he was hopelessly outmatched. Even if he’d only been facing one Zetanbren, he’d have been lunch meat. Against three, there probably wouldn’t even be enough left of him to qualify as that.
She knew she ought to walk away. She ought to go back to her nice living quarters and settle down with an old book or something, but she found her legs moving of their own accord and approaching the group with her hand on her pistol.
“Hey,” she called, loud enough to make their heads turn towards her, “bozos! I gotta remind you about the violence rules in this colony? I mean, I know reading is challenging, but surely you must consider the law important enough to have at least portions of it committed to memory, right?” It was rich, coming from Sadie. She’d never respected the law, was a thief even now, but she knew that a lot of people did, and punishments for violence tended to be severe. After all, this was a civilized society, supposedly above all forms of prejudice. It was bullshit in practice, of course, but it was an image the station’s leaders were eager to uphold, even if it meant protecting a species as insignificant as homo sapiens.
He was a scientist, not a fighter. The only reason he carried a laser pistol on him at all was to stop these kinds of attacks before they began. Get mugged once, and you were a lot more likely to entertain the idea of having a weapon on your person to defend yourself... even if you weren’t that great of a shot.
The brute that had been talking to Sehun was on top of him now, his large, clawed fingers encircling the human’s neck and head. In a reaction of fear, Sehun lost hold of his pistol, hearing it clatter to the floor with a sickening clunk! The alien’s vice-like grip stopped tightening as a fifth voice sounded, distracting the Zetanbren while they looked over at its source. Sehun could see just enough between the alien’s fingers to find that the person standing up for him was, in fact, another human. Interesting. He’d found that, in times such as these, his own species tended to steer clear and let their comrades pay the price. But this girl, for whatever reason, seemed intent on talking the Zetanbren down.
Well, more power to her because the shit stain that had Sehun’s life literally in his hand seemed to genuinely consider her words. He looked from her to his friends, who growled angrily and shrugged their massive shoulders.
“Not worth my time,” the vaguely raptor-esque creature hissed, shoving Sehun backward hard enough to send him stumbling to the ground. The Zetanbren looked between the two, clearly upset that their fun had been spoiled by logic, but still holding on strong to that I-could-kill-you-in-less-than-a-second glower. Sehun forcibly pursed his lips into a thin line to keep from saying anything else that would get him in trouble, instead staring up at them in fear until they finally lumbered off.
“Stupid fucking lizards,” Sehun grumbled once his attackers were out of ear-shot, picking himself up off the ground and retrieving his pistol. He glanced over at the girl, his lip quirking oddly as he seemed unsure how to react to her presence.
“Uh, thanks,” was what he settled on saying as he holstered the weapon. “Surprised that worked, to be honest. Thought for sure the last thing I was going to see would be the inside of my own head.”
