some sirius headcanons
i've been thinking a lot about my personal understanding of sirius as a character and what traits i would attribute to my interpretation of his personality based on this and here's some headcanons i've officially settled on:
he's the type of person to feel the deepest of his emotions privately. he's not uncomfortable with big and heavy emotions but he doesn't like feeling them around people and needs to fall apart completely in private
he is james' emotional rock. when james feels completely overwhelmed, sirius provides a non-judgemental space to talk through his feelings and thoughts
sirius is someone people come up to and start telling their deepest secrets to completely out of nowhere... he just has that aura that makes you feel like you can tell him your secrets.
sirius is hard to read, but the marauders seem to be the only ones who can tell when something feels off. he's quiet, even with them, but they're afraid approaching him might make him upset--they know sirius prefers to be alone when he's struggling and the last things they want to do is unintentionally push him further away.
sirius is good at understanding his emotions on an intellectual level but struggles to "get them out of his system" so to speak on an emotional level.
sirirus loves to do things for people as a quiet way to say "i love you." maybe invite them to a meal, buy them something they need, etc.
sirius is very intuitive. as such, his intelligence is, too. things just click for him and he can't always explain why they come to him easily. however, he enjoys explaining concepts he grasps strongly and watching the person he's talking to take interest and come to understand what he's explaining.
sirius can usually tell what's going to happen next in any given situation. he's got really strong "gut feelings".
sirius observes before making any decision. however, he loses himself to impulsivity at times due to how intense his emotions are.
sirius has a love/hate relationship with peter. he sees peter's insecurity and doesn't like it. he views peter as someone who sort of self-victimises a lot and resents how peter can't seem to hold himself accountable or be independent. he also understands peter is struggling and tries his best to be empathetic, and there are genuine moments when sirius' own insecurities cut so deeply that he can truly empathise with peter.
sirius doesn't always take criticism well and often "shuts down". this is misinterpreted as anger because his tone becomes more aggressive as a defensive reflex. this is an incompatible trait with peter who is naturally extremely passive and a huge point of contention between the two of them.
sirius doesn't realise how harsh he comes off and one of the reasons he loves james is because that man isn't overly-sensitive by nature. things roll off him very easily and so sirius can be a bit snappy and devilish and james will just be like "whatevs, lol, we all have our days."
on the opposite note, remus is a very sensitive person but he doesn't hold grudges. he lets things go fairly easily and sirius really appreciates this about him. remus brings out a softer side of him and he likes this, too.
remus knows how to sit in silence. and more than anything, sirius really needs this. he needs to sit and exist and feel the sunshine on his face whenever he feels a lot of pain. remus sits calmly and listens and this makes it easy for sirius to share his thoughts and feelings.
