HALSTON SAGE in Before I Fall ( 2017 )
make me choose: rafael or sebastian (asked by anon)
snohund:
sevda immediately regrets the words that came out of her mouth at the sign of a taunting smirk on the blonde’s brims. she tilts her head with a groan of vexation, shoulders slightly slumped as the brunette pouts. ❛ leighton, c’mon, ❜ sevda whines, reaching for a gentle grasp on their shoulders. ❛ please, universe ! grant leigh control of her body again, ❜ still the seamstress plays along to their game, giving leigh a light shake. ❛ or … ❜ sevda trails off, a hand leaving her shoulder to wrap digits around her wrist to lift the hand that grips onto the bag in leigh’s possession, guiding it to place it onto the surface of the workstation. the brunette flashes a rare, smug grin on her visage, naively assuming she has out-smarted the scout. ❛ i can just make you my puppet. hm ? ❜
Leighton just allowed herself to be shook a little, continuing to just smile like she could do this all damn day. Her wrist was then grasped, the scout raising an eyebrow as she watched Sevda bring it over to the workstation. And yes, Sevda’s proclamation could’ve made someone else fold, but alas, this was Leighton. “Your puppet? Uh huh... being in control. So that’s what you’re into,” they teased, probably louder than they needed but their voice had intentionally risen. It was like she was hoping Sevda’s mother could hear it all too.
They were able to keep wiggling out of any trap Sevda tried to set. “Like... Sevda, right here in the middle of your work place? Tsk tsk.” Yeah, they even shot a glance around the area, like other customers potentially hearing was a part of the plan.

Rowan knew they’d be sent out again soon enough. Till then, it was up to them to continue to train so their next venture wouldn’t be their last. Though they didn’t necessarily have to keep training during their free time, they thought it made sense. Stagnation would only lead to death. So even when weeks, sometimes even a month or two, went by without a mission to the outside, they trained.
Today, they knew just who they were going to train with as well. Leighton had been a thorn on their side for some time, particularly at the beginning of their dynamic. But time and understanding had worn the sharp point down. Were they friends? Rowan wasn’t sure, but they weren’t enemies. And Leighton could be a good sparring partner when they needed one.
“Hey,” Rowan greeted as they walked up to them, bundled up to defend from the cold, “You busy?”
x
Rowan, well, had been Leigh’s designated mentor since the beginning. And oof, was Leighton a brat back in the day. Stubborn, unserious, unwilling to really listen half the time. That’s not to say she couldn’t be like that nowadays, but back then, it wasn’t really a joke. But Rowan persisted, and it was because of that persistence that Leighton grew up to actually become a good scout, but also someone who gave more of a damn about Jericho and its people. If Rowan hadn’t put their foot down and whipped Leigh into shape, who knew how she would’ve turned out.
So, yes... there was some kind of bond there, whether or not Leighton ever admitted it out loud. “Afternoon, what lovely, warm weather we have today, hm?” Leighton joked, also bundled up as they lounged in a chair outside. “Define busy,” she hummed, gesturing toward the home renovation magazine she was casually flipping through. “I’m in my renovation arc,” Leighton declared. “Thinking about installing a pool in my backyard.”
Yes, the metaphorical backyard with green grass attached to the big house she totally owned. Maybe in another life. But they just sighed and closed the magazine, giving more attention to Rowan. “What’s up?”

“Amari, good to see you!” Agustin greeted as he neared the stall. The marketplace was filled with people coming and going, trading what they could for what they wanted. He wasn’t one to trade much on the account that all he ever wanted were spare parts for machines. “Everything’s good, how about you? Your father trusting you to hold the stall down today?”
He looked over the items before him, mildly interested in some of the items, but it was the food that caught his attention. His eyes lit up and he smiled at the kid, “Well, if you’re offering, who am I to deny?” He stepped to the side for an incoming customer but continued, “What did she make?”
“Doing good, thanks!” Amari responded, laughing softly at the mention of his father giving him the reins. “Yeah... sometimes it can be a little nerve-wracking, doing it alone. Definitely needed time to get used to it, but I think I’m doing pretty okay,” he explained. The stall was still standing, so that was always a plus. Another customer wandered over and he greeted them. They told him they were just looking around for now, so Amari nodded. “Sure! Just let me know if you have any questions or wanna get anything,” he explained.
He glanced back to Agustin to answer his prior question. “Chicken pot pie,” Amari said as he gestured toward a plate near the end of the table, all wrapped up and ready to go for whoever was willing to trade for it. “A smaller portion than last time, but I’m sure it could still fill anyone up.” Of course, he could be bias too because it was his mother, but still.
ava--almeida:
Ava was, once again, beside herself with worry for her best friend. Leighton going outside the walls was common enough that it should have lightened the worry that came with their departure. But it didn’t as each time it happened a thousand what ifs flashed before her eyes and sent her into a nervous frenzy. Ava had taken to wrapping herself up in work, taking extra shifts even on her days off, to ward off sitting, pacing, and worrying. Distraction helped but as soon as her eyes locked onto her best friend, all bets were off.
Leaving the injured man sitting on the bed, a medic nearby rolling her eyes at her antics before taking over her work, Ava all but barrelled into Leighton with the speed in which she ran. Arms encircling their frame, she breathed in the comforting scent of home and closed her eyes. “Hey,” she whispered, grateful to see them again and all teasing had fallen away so that she couldn’t answer any other way but genuinely.
While she knew deep and serious wasn’t really appreciated by Leighton, Ava couldn’t really help her reaction if she tried. She always squeezed too tightly, lingered too much in times like these. But a deep breath in, a second or two longer of the hold she had on Leighton, she was able to lean away from the hug and actually look down at them for longer than the second or two she had before. “Are you injured anywhere?”
x
And just like that, the medic’s attention completely disregarded the patient in her care and she didn’t care about anyone else except that blonde. Like hell, if Ava was this willing to forget work for a healthy Leighton, who knew what she’d do if her friend came back injured. Not that the scout was going to intentionally test out that hypothesis. A soft grunt from Leighton was definitely released as Ava knocked into her with a tight embrace. While the embraces used to majorly catch them off guard, they expected them from the medic now.
Of course, she hadn’t been used to hugs like this one in the past. But both of them, Leighton and Ava, seemed to have managed to break past the walls of the other. Well, at least enough to be comfortable with this sort of thing. And hell, Leigh was not one who was normally comfortable with… affection. Not in the way that tended to steer away from just the surface level of flirtation. If it were anyone else doing this out of the blue, Leighton wouldn’t have been as relaxed as she seemed to be now.
There used to be hesitation in the past but now, Leigh was actually embracing her back. And that was on growth. Arms snaked around the medic in return. “Hi,” they echoed the little greeting, gaze shifting to Ava’s features when she did finally pull back. Eyes playfully rolled. “Not a scratch on me, Dr. Almeida,” the scout proclaimed, an amused grin appearing. “Though... you’re more than welcome to check.”
ohjcnnys:
Another chuckle, though a little looser than the one before. A little more free. “ Absolutely shocked I didn’t have that title already, ” They continued the joke with ease. Even for surviving a frozen apocalyptic hell-scape with zombies, Jenny Thewlis didn’t really even whisper fancy. “ Like, shocked to my core. ” They held a hand to their chest, looking over at Leighton with a wry grin.
They hummed an approval at their mention of magazines. Though not their own particular choice, they understood it. The fascination with the world before. Most people they met that had been born into the tundra were like that to some degree. In one way or another. “ Do you even know how many you have or is it, like, beyond keeping count now? ” They asked, curiosity paired with a light teasing. But what was on their wishlist? “ Maybe a CD or something, I found that little player thing the other week. ” Little player thing essentially being a walkman. A 2010s version, not that Jenny knew any of that. “ Or um, ” They hesitated briefly, trying to think of the word as they walked. “ Some horror book, maybe. Or thriller? I dunno, something like that. I think someone might be willing to trade for it. ” Truthfully they had an idea of what they were looking for, but no idea in the world what that idea might look like in reality.
x
“Shh, I always thought you were,” Leigh swore when Jenny pretended to be offended, putting on an act as well. “It’s everyone else who’s ignorant. Me? I know better. Cross my heart.” How many magazines did Leighton have? A very good question and they hummed thoughtfully before grinning. “Haven’t you heard? I’m the world record holder,” the blonde answered in almost confidence, though there was still a joking tone lingering. Honestly? She had no idea how many she had but just knew she was nearly always willing to get more.
“Little player thing, ah yes,” they agreed dramatically. “See? You’re so fancy and cool that you don’t even need to say its actual name.” Leighton laughed, but definitely understood too. She had one of those too, found one a few years ago and had a few CDs here and there as well. “Ooo, horror. Spooky. Any particular title?”

although it was disappointing to hear that her latest scout was unsuccessful, it was still nice to hear leighton’s voice. “sorry to hear that. i’m sure the next one will be better though,” she replied, her optimism shining through her tone of voice. then turning her attention to the thought of a rusted pink kids watch. “you’re willing to part with it just for me? what will the people of jericho think that we’ve taken such a valuable resource?” she smirks.
teasing was such a harmless way to flirt and on days that felt like the life had been drained out of her in the med bay, the distraction was very much welcomed. “you saying you don’t like the scrub look? i thought about making it my permanent look. really accentuates my features you know?” the dark hair girl laughs, spinning to show herself off before she takes a seat next to the other on the couch.
“A fair point,” Leighton admitted, shrugging her shoulders. “Who knows? Maybe the world will adopt a new currency in the form of Hello Kitty merchandise,” they mused, the thought of that quite amusing. Would the world end up being better or worse if that were the case? That was the question. When Kosa questioned the interest in the scrubs uniform, Leighton let out a dramatic hum of thought. “Now I don’t remember saying that,” the scout pointed out with a smirk, a grin spreading across her lips as she watched Kosa pose.
“Oh, she’s a part time model too? If only I had a camera. What a phenomenal photoshoot that would be,” Leigh teased, the conversation so casual that it could even seem like the world wasn’t in an apocalypse. If people didn’t know better, of course.

open starter ⸻ location: cafeteria
when it came to their daily rations of food everyone had their favorite things, it came with the territory of the world they lived in. one of kamran’s favorites was rice. it was one of the few things that still reminded him of his mother; someone who would always find a way to get double rice. he was always amazed at her ability to negotiate with people and although he was her son, he didn’t get that ability.
on his luckiest days there was someone in the cafeteria who was willing to trade something for their rice and he was hopeful that today he could find someone willing to trade their rice for his bread. “hey, sorry to bother you,” he says as he approaches the other at one of the tables in his sight, “you wouldn’t want to swap your rice for my bread would you? it’s kind of my favorite,” the male lets a soft smile round out his sentence as he holds his tray in front of him.
Casual chatter was happening between Amari and a small group of friends across the table from him. And he was just about to dig into his food until a voice behind him snapped his attention away from the plate. “Kam, hey! How goes it?” Amari greeted brightly with a smile, not showing any insinuation that he felt bothered by the interruption at all. If anything, he was always glad to make conversation. “Oh, for sure! I haven’t touched it yet, all yours,” he promised then picked up his own tray. “Here, I can slide it onto your plate if you want.”
willowgrovesrp:
She smiled at his question and gestured for him to take a seat on the other side of her desk. “There’re always projects in the work. Sit down, please.” She reached for her notebook and flipped through to the most recent page. “While I would love to teach you everything on earth and overwhelm you immediately, I’m going to hold myself back. What are you interested in? Fine woodworking? Like intricate and smaller projects? Carrying around the wood for me to use? Mr. Carson needs a new roof, I was planning on starting that later today actually.”
Nodding eagerly, he wandered over to the empty chair, taking a seat. The list of suggestions that Willow gave made him pause to think, but gave an earnest answer after. “Ah, well, is it overdoing it if I say all of it?” Amari asked, giving an uncertain smile before letting out a soft burst of laughter. “And I swear I’m not just saying that! Like... really, I’m down for anything,” he promised and then his eyes lit up at the mention of the roof. “Oh, yeah! I heard about Mr. Carson's roof. I could help with that if you want? I’m free. Just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.”
tenoch-gutierrez:
while tenoch had no problem with amari, he sometimes found it hard to be around him. their paths didn’t cross often but he often felt himself feeling intense jealousy over his relationship with his parents. it was stupid and unnecessary but he couldn’t help it, he was envious of the younger man’s ability to have such a close relationship with his parents when every day he spent a significant amount of time reminiscing and trying to remember the moments he shared with his. “she can be a little over-dramatic.” tenoch remarked softly, reaching up to scratch his scruffy beard as his nervous eyes came to rest on the ground. “but she seemed very appreciative… kept saying how much of a nice young man you were so… good job.” it was obvious socializing was not his strong suite by the way his words flowed unnaturally, heavy and clunky, at least he was trying though.
The thing with these post-apocalyptic settlements was that it was full of people from all walks of life. People who had been through some shit, lost people, the like. And Amari knew he was blessed to have his family, but some people didn’t have that luxury. It made him wonder, honestly, if it was like that when the world was normal too. If there had been as much loss and hardships as life saw now. “Yeah, just a bit...” Amari agreed with a laugh then blinked at the compliment.
“Really? Oh, dang. Well, I’ll have to thank her next time I see her, for sure. Maybe I can bring her some food in return?” he suggested out loud. “Oh, but how have you been? Coal mining shifts been good, I hope?”
Lol it's me
My father was a serial killer also, Malcolm. I was young, but I deserve to be messed up too.
