it’s ironic ---- the girl named valentina is born in a cold january morning , while her brother is born in st. valentine’s day. not that it’s any stranger. he is , after all , named after one of the most famous lovers in literature , while she after a mere gentleman of verona. romeo wonders if his parents were surprised at how they turned out. romeo montague is a rebel , something of a sentimental troublemaker , and while that might’ve described romeo jung in his youth , he’s now more calculating than he ever thought before. too taken by careful moves and considerations of his image , long gone were the days of a young man who took a liking to skipping class because a movie he liked was coming out on that day.
valentina’s no queen of outlaws , either. in her case , romeo thinks it might’ve been just a shakespearean theme that his parents were going for. what he learned of valentine as a character didn’t resemble his little sister at all. sweet and responsible , she was the very opposite of the family disappointment. was it difficult not to resent her for it ? of course. romeo’s only human after all , and jealousy is one of the defining traits of man. having never been the family’s pride and joy in quite the same way , he admits that his envy was more concerning the favoritism in its entirety rather than something he had and lost. he’s not sure if that makes it worse or better.
in the end , though , he loves his little sister , and she loves him. romeo calls her way more than his parents , though that’s likely because she understands his struggles far more than they ever would. having been a fan of the industry as a whole before her brother even joined its ranks , she knew what kind of life he’d be leading. the diets , the constant reprimands , the hellish trainee life and subsequent hectic schedule post - debut. she was glad he was in one of the ❛ artist type ❜ groups ; she’d told him as much when he debuted. she could brag that her brother was one of the idols who wrote his own songs ---- even if it was just the melody and none of the words.
maybe it hurt a little , knowing that valentina might’ve been waiting to use him as a prop just like his parents had his entire life , ultimately giving up when it became apparent that academia and stem were the last things he ever wanted to pursue. romeo knows she doesn’t mean anything by it. she’s just a kid ---- turning twenty very soon ( too soon ) ---- and she can’t help it. she’s related to someone ( moderately ) famous , and in the age of social media , the impulse to boast about this connection is almost too great to ignore. romeo’s saving grace is that he hasn’t been home in years , so any pictures she has to offer of them together will only be of them as children.
but because he loves her , he doesn’t mind. if there’s anyone in that terrible , soul - sucking family that romeo genuinely cares about , it’s the girl who believed in him from the very beginning. who promised to buy every single one of his albums , to convince her friends to stream , who comforted him when he called in tears about how difficult it was and how he made a terrible mistake. the only one to say ❛ i knew you could do it ❜ after he had spent almost a decade as a trainee. there may be an inclination to brag , but the love was genuine. it was always there.
and that love is why staying up all night ( in spite of an already heavy case of insomnia as comeback season approaches ) to see her text thanking him profusely for the flowers , cake , and signed albums is worth it.
