Help Me Help Mickey
Date Posted: January 31, 2019
On December 4th 2018, my sweet boy Mickey got injured playing around and I could tell he need medical intervention. This injury happened while he was play-chasing around my other dog (his daughter) and he let everyone know when he let out this heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him ever make that noise before and immediately stopped what I was doing to see what happened. I’d only see Mickey whimpering as he struggles to walk but his back legs wouldn’t do as he wanted.
Scared, I picked him up to force him not to use his legs and coddled him trying to see what was hurting him. Visually, I couldn’t see anything wrong. No bite marks, no cuts, no thorns — nothing that told me something is really wrong. When I carefully placed him down, that’s when he was able to balance himself but this time not using his left hind leg.
There was nothing I could see that would show what was wrong with his leg and my family suggested that he’d just sprain his leg, got scared, and will get better. Having no medical or veterinary knowledge, I set an appointment the next day (due to time constraints).
On December 5th 2018, Mickey was seen by a vet and given a physical examine to which the vet announced Mickey is prone to a luxating patella and also mentioned that another possible injury being a ligament tear; my poor boy is prone to dislocating his knees and may have teared some tissue.
The vet prescribed Mickey an anti-inflammatory medication to use for 10 days to see if Mickey’s knee pops back in place, and if not to start discussing surgical treatments. 10 days went and Mickey wasn’t better. The estimate cost would be $3000 and my family suggested I get a second opinion.
Due to time constraints with my job or other appointments, I wasn’t able to get Mickey’s second opinion until January 8th 2019 (I still have his medication so ideally he shouldn’t be in pain) and they did confirm (physical examine and X-rays) that not only did Mickey have a luxating patella but a torn ligament as well. I knew then, that surgery would be the case and discussed setting up a consult with the surgeon, that way I had an idea of what to expect. Due to my scheduling conflicts, I was not able to get an appointment until January 31st 2019.
After the surgeon examined Mickey himself, he discussed how the surgery go, being able to handle both the tissue tear and luxating patella in one setting, and what to expect for the pricing of it all.
The estimate costs ranges between $5027.63 and $5093.69.
I’m a self-check host/cashier currently make $11/hr and I can’t bankrupt myself to struggle making payments on bills or providing for my dogs. Family has suggested that I abandon Mickey or put him to sleep… and abandoning a helpless creature is incredibly immoral to me and I feel like euthanizing Mickey is too extreme for a fixable ailment.
His treatment plan is good for 30 days, and that would be March 2, 2019. Please help me reach my goal for Mickey!
(Note: I didn’t get dogs I couldn’t afford, I was just the only one who bothered giving them their legally required license and vaccinations plus vet recommended dog food. Thus, I’m attached and want to use all sources before making any heavy-hearted choices.)
