One thing that irritates me as a musician are the other kids that play ~uncommon~ instruments like oboe or bassoon or like other forms of saxophones and clarinets, and they think they’re such amazing players because they play a “unique” instrument but rlly they’re just average (or sometimes even poor) players with overinflated egos because of all the praise they get for their ~uncommon~ instruments and because they don’t have as much competition in their band

Plus plus some kids who play regular instruments could be absolutely incredible if they were given the chance to play an unusual instrument but most times they don’t have the resources/money to do so!!! Like there are so many kids who could sound amazing on a more unusual instrument but they can’t afford the instrument or the lessons!! And yet there are priveledged kids who get their ~unique~ instruments practically handed to them and they get unnecessary praise and think it’s okay to be a massive dick to people who play “common” instruments

I don’t think it’s like that everywhere though friend.

In most cases, people who play “unique” instruments really have that drive and desire. They’re also really needed because it’s cool to hear certain parts in songs to get more wholeness in a sense. Like in my college band, it’s alwesone gearing oboe solos because it offers a nice refreshing take.

Plus, if you play a “regular” instrument, it’s because you made the choice to. Not everyone in life is privledged, and some people have too much, but it shouldn’t stop them from wanting to achieve something. If they want to play a unique instrument, or if many want them to, theres a way to do so friend

Listen. I play oboe. I know I sound completely trash sometimes on oboe because it’s a finicky instrument (one screw gets loose and fucks up ur day kind of shit). I dont think I’m better than anyone in my band. Im sure some kids in middle school have a better grip on how to play oboe than me, somebody who’s been playing and learning for about a year. If i know i suck on oboe, why do i play it? Because it’s fucking FUN learning the ropes on a new instrument, and it’s important to the band that we have one so our bd doesn’t have to give the part to someone else. I dont play for Cool Points or whatever. If i wanted Cool Points i’d learn every instrument in the band. Or buy a two thousand dollar flute. If anybody’s pretentious like you describe it, OP, it’s first and second chair players.
