This 13th episode was lit!!!

HERE there be SPOILERS!

Here we go……

I loved every bit of it, michael being resourceful and smart , her eloquent speech swayed mirror Georgiou, especially the part of ‘no one gets to decide my future I forge my path’ I clapped and was like ‘yusssss queen’. Mirror Lorca’s obsession with michael creeped the daylight outta me, I was like ‘yikes!’ When michael offered herself in exchange for the Discovery crew safety. The smile on lorca’s face made me feel a bit ill. I kid you not!

Then the fight scenes ? Downright iconic!

Then mirror Georgiou getting saved by a stubborn michael who refused to watch her die? I believe my neighbors heard me yelling ‘Yessssssssssss Queen Specialist Michael Burnham!!!”

This episode knocked the ball outta the park for me. I love it and I especially love Michael Burnham, a complex WOC in a sci fi setting who is everything I’ve been missing.

Dear Star Trek Discovery writers and the people who don’t see any problem with the portrayal of “””diversity””” in the show:

Okay so let me explain myself (SPOILERS): First of all, to the people who keep saying “Hey, chill the fuck out! Culber will be back!” well fuck this because Culber can be back from the dead and i still won’t be any less mad because that’s not the issue here. It’s important for you to get this.

I’m saying it again, this show and its idea of diversity is questionable since the beginning. The original trailer indicated that we would have two strong women of color in charge of a spaceship and a crew. But now we’re stuck with a white male character as the main lead??? I love Jason and Lorca’s character, but that’s not the point.

2 WOC have been killed, and now a gay latino. All of them in a violent way.  They also gave the spy/sanguinary/abused warrior storyline to another POC. So yeah if some fans are upset and want to stop watching the show, they’re allowed to do so and you have no right to judge how they should be feeling about any of this. 

If a show like Star Trek: Discovery that is supposed to represent the Star Trek legacy, feels the need to kill off half of its cast for shock value and to keep the audience’s interest then that’s not a good show. Even if the story is good and that’s the case for Discovery. This 10th episode wasn’t bad at all by the way. But at this point, there is no good representation or diversity, just lazy writing and marketing logic. 

TV shows writers also need to stop using science fiction to exploit some of the oldest TV tropes that were still acceptable in the last century but not in 2018 (I’m looking at you too X-Files). When i’m talking about marketing logic a few lines above, that’s it: we can’t lie to ourselves but if Star Trek or The X-Files (and many more other iconic franchises or TV shows) are brought back to life today it’s because the filming companies are using people’s nostalgia to sell their stuff and simultaneously attract a new audience. They’re not doing it genuinely, it’s still a business that needs to be cost-effective in the end.

But hey you can bring back any of these iconic stories to the screen, it doesn’t have to be disrespectful to the fans, and the minorities with misleading promises. I love the Discovery cast and the rest of the people who are involved with the show and who share some of their incredible work on the social medias but the POC totally deserved better. LGBT+ people and women too in my opinion. I really hope the writing will be improved in the next season and that our valid criticisms and concerns will be taken into consideration.

Alright you know what no. I don’t care if they run with a Deus Ex courtesy of Stamet’s magical mushrooms or whatever ‘scientific marvel’ they pull out of their butts. I am sick and tired of the back from the dead trope being used as a way to shock the audience of a television show. In my opinion it’s already one of the cheapest and most unsatisfactory ways of introducing conflict into a narrative for a piece of media, and the fact that its happening to a character who is an embodiment of the type of progress that Star Trek tries so often to give us for hope in what the future holds makes it even worse. I know people who became physically ill after watching that scene. This is no longer okay. And if this is what the writers think is necessary to have an ‘edgier’ Star Trek, then maybe it’s time for a new perspective in that writers room.
