drawing some of ur fav chars over and over again until you only begin to feel comfortable with them. only slightly. 

one matter is drawing just to maintain your perception of their likeness.

second is how detailed you want to be-that is one stylization.

third is drawing them in as few strokes or lines as possible-simply-that is another stylization. (if you cant simplify something, do you really understand it kind of thing…)

to be able to draw them exactly-that’s something that’d require directly and actively looking at a ref.

Its one thing to rely on refs and something completely different to make something because you understand (more or less) their basic shapes-therefore able to come up with your own poses.

“you have to know the rules to bend them”-more like..you have to understand the rules in order to manipulate and change shapes without always relying on something.

you can know the rules, but does that mean a person understands them? how does knowing something reflect how/when they’re able to use/apply that concept?
