D. Ray White clogging and singing to “Cindy” from the documentary “Talking Feet”. Yeah, that is Jesco’s daddy.
D. Ray White was thought by some to be the best mountain dancer in America before his murder in 1985. He’s still a legend in Boone County, West Virginia and beyond. His son, Jesco White, is the Dancing Outlaw.
The Wooks on Red Barn Radio
The fiddle player, Jessie Wells, used to play in an old time string band with Chris Stapleton’s bass player, JT Cure (they were in a couple of other bands together too). Jessie is an instructor, archivist, and studio supervisor at the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music. Hard not to brag on some mountain boys done good.
The Heights Of Grass - Live at the Flatrock. Most of this band broke off to become the Virginia Squires. I’m really not much on listening to concert tapes or live simply because of crowd noise. On this cut you can hear some good harmony singing and Sammy Shelor doing his thing on the banjo and the Simpkins brothers keeping it all sweet.

Just heard The Bluegrass Doctor, Ralph Stanley died. I was grateful to get to see him a few times. He has dozens of great songs, but I couldn’t think of any more appropriate.

I am from Van Lear, KY. I wrote this sad song about two travelers falling in love in the mountains from back home. It’s very dear to my heart.
In two weeks, I am performing this song at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass Festival! I am so honored that my song was selected.

In 1976 Charlie Cline released - More Dobro. I love this song, and it sure does not get played enough by todays bands. I’d say the ultimate version of it is by Vic Jordan’s Pickaway album but this is a nice clean version and the banjo picker isn’t just copying what Vic played down.
