How do we forgive Thomas Mann for seperating Tony and Morten?
Easy: we don’t.
I have not watched Succession, but based on the posts about it that keep crossing my dash I am convinced that the fans would love Buddenbrooks.
What about a remake? The idea is so scary, but what about a good one? I would be seated for that

Recent anon here, if you recall I mentioned the possibility of creating a discord server if I find some people, and after some demographic investigations it's looking like Buddenbrooks discord might go ahead. Would you or anyone who sees this maybe be interested in joining?
I surely would, so update me on this! Buddenbrooks folks, for anyone who’s interested, I can eventually share also here the way to access this
Old but gold, tag yourself
Recent anon here; don't worry about my friend, sadly he saw right through me :(.
I suppose I'll have to keep baiting people into reading Buddenbrooks so I can have someone to discuss who would fall for crypto with. If I find at least five people I might make a discord.
My current bait is marketing Christian as a pathetic little meow meow.
As for Hannos Schultag I've done that before as well, with just about the bait you described. Generally I use that to draw in the Spring Awakening crowd, but it sometimes works on Dead Poet's society fans as well.
Luckily I run in circles with interest in history, classical literature and the likes, where most of the time marketing it as a very interesting insights into societal change through the 19th century has a good chance of actually attracting readers as well.
You’re a person of culture indeed.
Christian…. THE iconic king. I think no character made me laugh, ever, as he did.
But what about Kai Edgy Mölln reading Edgar Allan Poe during school hours??
This reminds me, I have to re-type the characters with MBTI profiles… stay tuned
“Who wants to study Buddenbrooks?”
“ :( “
“Who wants to hear about gothic-fashioned, German homosexuals with anxiety issues, in love with their best friend (also musicals)? “
“ :) “
Thanks to the previous anon I just disrupted the educational system
Death of the author means that since nothing in the book explicitly contradicts the possibility of Toni and Morten reconciling after the end of the novel I chose to believe they at the very least got some closure, and maybe finally got to marry each other as well. Nothing in canon supports that this happened, but it cannot be refuted either, and on that ground I once told a friend that there was a romantic plotline with an open but optimistic ending when recommending the book.
Oh my god. Two possible interpretations: 1) you’re a terrible person (from the point of view of your poor friend, that head THIS just to find the most angsty love story I can think of) or 2) you’re a brilliant strategist who just has spread the holy text; hence, you did nothing wrong in your entire life. Preach.
Now I’m curious about how would you have recommended Hanno’s Schultag… maybe High School Musical?
In a modern AU, which Buddenbrooks character do you think would be most likely to fall for crypto?
Do I have to answer? Christian IS the king of new, emphatic, terrible ideas that resolve into a waste of real money
being able to understand plattdeutsch because of dutch is an ability i never thought i needed
Hot take: Our last summer (Abba) is about Toni and Morten

And we hate him for that.
— Mann, Thomas. Die Buddenbrooks. 160.
He ate a ragout of shell-fish, julienne soup, fried soles, toast veal with creamed potatoes and cauliflower, maraschino pudding, and pumpernickel with roquefort; and he found a fresh and delicate compliment for each fresh course. Over the sweet he lifted his dessert-spoon, gazed at one of the tapestry statues, and spoke aloud to himself, thus: “God forgive me, I have eaten far too well already. But this pudding — ! It is too wonderful! I must beg my good hostess for another slice.” And he looked roguishly at the Consul’s wife.
Thomas Mann, Buddenbrooks, 1901
I heard this passage on audiobook and had to start jotting it down to look it up. I love the way the food is described here, it made me want to eat pumpernickel with roquefort and maraschino pudding
