Squished bunny face
Showing off Poe’s big brother, Mr.Kitty, named by my (then) 3 year old.
I rescued him from my parents’ neighbor’s property. I’ll give you a few reasons why I stole him: They have 30 cats that they dont take care of, all of his brothers and sisters died because their mother wasnt taking care of them and when I pulled him out from under that trailer, he was covered in blood and fleas. His eye weren’t even open yet, so he was too young to have any kind of flea meds. So I had to give him a bath with dawn dishsoap everyday. The fleas were so bad, they would pile up 1/2 an inch high on his nose. After all that, here he is, 3 years later. He is my best friend and I love him dearly. Mr. really hates Poe though…..
Guess what?!? Poe is a boy. He is much happier now that the identity crisis is over. I bought him a new home to celebrate. :) I’ve learned to read his actions better and we get along pretty well now. I’m still working on how to get him to stop chewing the crap out of my favorite chair though. I’ve been offering him alternatives, like the experts suggest, but he’s not a phone book chewing kind of bunny. Most of the toys I’ve bought him go completely untouched and I dont know what else to buy for him. If anyone has suggestions, I’m open to them. :)
I'm assuming the chair legs that he's attacking are wooden. Try covering them up with some pvc/vinyl or corrugated tubing. I use vinyl tubing to cover up exposed wires that I can't get off the ground, so they're great for bunny proofing my house. Depending on the thickness of your chair legs you may have to go with the corrugated tubing. They come in all thicknesses. Just cut down the center, wrap it around the leg and secure around it with a zip tie.
If you're really strapped for cash you can always wrap some cardboard in the areas that need protecting and secure around that with a zip tie. You may have to change out the cardboard later though because he'll no doubt eventually tear through it.
And finally, the other option (if you don't want ugly cardboard or tubing on your furniture) is to train him very similar to a cat and use a spray bottle full of water. I know it sounds cruel but 2 or 3 times getting squirt in the face and he'll get the idea. I try not to use it very often because if you use it for everything he'll get overwhelmed and confused about all the things he can't do vs being rewarded for all the things he can do. Set certain rules for why you would use it and stick to it. It's definitely not a cure all for everything but it works for things like chewing on furniture.
Also, in terms of toys and phonebooks. My E-lop never showed any interest in them until he got older. When he was a baby he always wanted to climb and dig. So cheap (untreated) wicker baskets for him to destroy, climb on and dig in worked out really well. I flipped some over for hopping on and filled some up with shredded paper and he'd be busy for hours.
