Video: Microsoft Illumiroom demo.
According to Microsoft, “IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept system that augments the area surrounding a television with projected visualizations to enhance traditional gaming experiences”.
Details of the device first surfaced in January, when it was rumored the technology might be featured in the next Xbox. As seen in this video, the device is obviously nowhere near being ready to ship, but still looks interesting.
One of the eye-opening sessions for me at the Expand conference I attended this past weekend was on robots.
I was always aware that there were advances happening with robots but for some reason the last robot that was on my radar was Honda’s Asimo at a CES in 2006.
Well things are changing quite rapidly since that shiny little white guy who walked up the stairs in Las Vegas at that time - which was quite an achievement.
Boston Dynamics builds advanced robotics focused on remarkable behaviour including mobility, agility dexterity and speed. Unlike the robots featured from Willow in my post yesterday, Boston Dynamics doesn’t intend to have these robots in the home (well quite yet anyways). They are dedicated in advancing the mechanics of robots which can be applied within the industry.
The projects that they work on are also mainly military in nature.
The video above features a robot inspired by the Cheetah and it is demonstrating its ability to run on a treadmill up to 18.0 mpH. Which is pretty impressive.
You can check out their website to watch other demos on Alpha Dog - a robot which can walk over things and also on various terrains.
Boston Dynamics CEO Marc Raibert said on the robotics panel at Engadget Expand this weekend that his robots do not intend to mimic or replicate animals but are very much inspired by the movements of natural animals which is evident some of the shapes, names and especially the capabilities in these demos.

So you’re tres green chic with your solar-charging jacket, and that Ralph Lauren backpack keeps your gadgets energized even off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. But what about stylish photovoltaics for your home, dear earth-friendly aesthete? We humbly submit the Electree, by French designer Vivian Muller. Shaped like a bonsai tree, each of its 27 leaves is a solar panel that helps charge a 13,500mAh battery. Over the last couple of decades, technology has evolved beyond belief and has transformed the lives of consumers. Who in the world of the 1990’s could envision the world of the present, as we become increasingly connected by a global information system that is completely integrated into our...
