exploded fortress of solitude - mike kelley (2012)
Do you remember that Al Bundy was an undercover FBI agent before becoming a shoe salesman?
Sick not Funny.
Who was Divine again?
I strongly encourage anyone who doesn't know, or needs a reminder, to find out all about Divine! He was John Waters' muse and one of the most epic drag queens of all time. The spirit of the confrontational button-pushing movies they made together, like PINK FLAMINGOS, FEMALE TROUBLE, POLYESTER (my favorite), and HAIRSPRAY, can definitely be found in the tone and humor of Married With Children. I was delighted when I found out he was cast on the show--though not totally surprised!--and deeply saddened that it never got to happen.
Here is a great documentary about him on Tubi:
The complex life of Divine, the gleefully brash muse of director John Waters, who became one of the first drag superstars of the big screen.
and here is a music video for one of the singles he recorded, a new wave version of the Four Seasons song "Walk Like a Man". It's bad ass and I always watch it when I need a pickmeup--but be warned, it will be stuck in your head for DAYS:
Enjoy!!!
I hope the upcoming Married with Children animated series isn't diet Family Guy with the Bundys.
I didn't know anything about that, but I hope so too!
I know he wouldn't exist today since feminist would've most likely label him as a sexists, misogynistic, dumbAF pig. But if Al Bundy were around today then I wonder how he would've handled a "Karen" in Gary's Shoes & Accessories for Today's Woman if she had a visit of course. You know, the middle-class, anti-vaxxer, irritating, obnoxious, angry, entitled, demanding, short-haired styled, "I Like to Speak to Your Manager" type of woman.
I gotta say, I don't completely get it when people say that "you couldn't do that today" about politically incorrect TV. I think when people say that, it's usually an expression of their personal worries that their own way of life is embattled. We certainly still have extreme "politically incorrect" TV these days; It's Always Sunny is about to start its 16th season, South Park has been on for 26, Family Guy continues to be heavily memed, and then you have highly popular dramas like Mad Men that elaborately fetishize misogynistic behavior, and Game of Thrones that made a romantic spectacle out of rape from episode 1. *Maybe* you can argue that you can't do something like the Benny Hill Show anymore, where the sexploitation aspect of it is played in a completely straight and uncritical way as fun for everyone, but I dunno, I feel like The Man Show isn't far enough behind us to say that for sure. But that's another thing: People often forget or ignore that Married With Children was supposed to be satirical. Sure it was possible for viewers to identify unironically with Al Bundy, that's a choice you can make, but one of the show's main director/writer/stars was a lesbian, and Divine was cast in a reoccurring role right before he tragically passed. When people are surprised by my love for MWC, I always tell them that it's not a mindless orgy of political incorrectness for its own sake like they think, it's really a gag--it's John Waters for breeders.
ANYWAY. If the show were around today, it would be really interesting to see how it handled contemporary issues like the rise of "Karen". I think the results would probably be hilarious, and actually valuable! People are so precious about their political feelings these days, all over the spectrum; people who bitch about liberal snowflakes will crumble to dust if they can't have everything exactly their own way and be surrounded by people exactly like themselves, just as much as liberals can't handle any tire-kicking of the status quo, just as much as lefties are prone to pretentious in-fighting and purity testing. It's like everybody in the world has completely lost their sense of humor, as well as their ability to handle criticism. A show like Married With Children could definitely help reinstate some perspective, that's for sure!
