I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.

I have never seen Dawson’s Creek but here I am watching it dubbed in French on the tiny tv in my hotel room because sometimes it's the stupidest little things that make you feel better when you're 400+ miles away from one home and 6500+ miles away from another.

2014 has been the first full year of my memory that I didn’t divide into semesters. Perhaps because of that or for whatever other reason, I find myself forgetting where so many months went and only remembering certain events. I rang in 2014 at a friend’s house where children threw fire crackers at each other in the streets and I cowered on the sidewalk and dodged sparks. I went to Saint-Louis for the Jazz Festival in June. In January I started an internship, and in June I started a consultancy, and September I started my current job. One of my good friends left in February and then came back in June and left again in August. Most of the other times are fuzzy. I went to three baby-naming ceremonies, and spent a few weekends at a few different beach house, and attended several art shows and concerts. I played with countless puppies and kittens, adopted a few of them, and met new people and stopped wasting my energy on people who didn’t reciprocate.
I feel a lot more settled now, physically and mentally, and figured out a few things that were up in the air, including finally getting a job which was probably the most relieving and unexpected thing to happen this year. I feel anxious less often about doing seemingly-simple things like going to the boutique or talking with people I don’t know. I’m less afraid to speak my poor-but-improving Wolof, and I’m very comfortable speaking my almost-fluent-but-not-yet-there French.
I have some high hopes for 2015 like making a trip back to the US (finally), moving in to an apartment that isn’t run by a crotchety old landlord, and feeling even less anxious about everyday things so I can save some anxiety for things that deserve it. And also catching a few more sunsets like this one.
