Attention non-artists who commission artists: donāt fuckin do this???
Actually had someone do this to me too. Was doing a art stream, it took me over 2 hours to do his inked commission, he got a refund cause āit took too longā that he figured I wasnāt going to do it after I gave him the file.
Donāt do this. Do not.
Iāve had this happen to me with a $350 comic :/ I had already finished it, it was full color, 6 panels and had a full bg in every panel. I was lucky in that I didnāt spend him money yet, but it left me without funds. Iāve also had the above happen to me as well.
Donāt do this shit to artists. Weāre people too. Drawing for you is more than a hobby. Itās a job.
Use Paypal Invoices.Ā
I cannot stress this enough. That shit helps A LOT when it comes down to Paypal refunds/disputes. Thereās a description box that letās you put in what the product is/how long itāll take/yadda yadda, and then thereās another little memo box that only you and paypal can see where you can say itās a digital commission and doesnāt require shipping (So Donald Mcfuck canāt say that they never got their commission). And thereās also a box for your Terms & Conditions where you can say, if you have any conflicts/want a refund - email me, or you can actually tell the user that this is a digital commission and they wonāt be getting a hard copy of it.
ARTISTS. PLEASE USE PAYPAL INVOICES. it will SAVE you. And to: the people who do this to artists ā Fuck you. Itās okay if you change your mind and want a refund. But freaking TALK to us and let us know whatās going on. Let us WORK with you.
ALSO A HUGE TIP: Invoices paid will automatically set up a shipping notice which, if not fulfilled, can land you in SERIOUS hot water with PayPal. Since a lot of artists donāt print and ship the commissions, this is a huge problem.
However! Totally manageable. Just go to your PayPal, scroll down to find Seller Preferences
>> Shipping Preferences
>> Display Ship Button. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Then youāre all set!
As a big supporter of artists, donāt you ever fucking dare fuck over an artist like that. Like donāt. And if they take their time to do a good job, donāt shit all over them for it! Donāt be a fucking ass hole. Just donāt. These people put a Ā LOT of work and time and effort into their artwork. Just donāt be that guy. Often times these artists arenāt even getting what they deserve in compensation.Ā
I am very grateful my customers have been good to me, but Iām spreading the word.
Very important!
As a new artist, Iām very grateful for this post. Never knew this. Thank you.
Adding that using PP Invoices and removing the shipping option is useful for buyers as well ā if it isnāt turned off, PayPal wonāt let buyers pay for a commission without submitting their shipping information (ie. personal address), and sometimes you donāt want an artist youāve commissioned for a digital piece to know where you live!
I commission a lot of art and there are a variety of ways in which I have paid for art before. Though I think the artists Iāve worked with will testify I do pay stuff without making an issue out of it - learn how to send invoices if you want to be sure everything gets sent properly and youāre protected from folks that arenāt as nice as me about payments. The only downside is that I canāt tip if you send invoices. ;-) (I think? Is that possible? I donāt think it is. Havenāt seen an option for that.)Ā
Part 1 of my tutorial on facial diversity. Ā Look for part 2 in a couple weeks!

I cannot tell you how much I just love blades. They are beautiful.
Blades are great because they are functional art. There is both aesthetic purpose and utilitarian purpose behind them. I love that.
Hi Bret! I love your work. I was really inspired by the podcast episode you did lately and I was wondering if you could maybe talk a little bit about how you kept focus when you changed careers. I have such a hard time fighting with my anxiety and keeping my eye on the prize that I was wondering if you went through the same things and how you might have coped. Keep up the incredible work! Thanks!
First, thanks for listening.Ā For those of you who donāt know what we are talking about, the interview is here https://soundcloud.com/creativetrek/e-8-brett-bean-how-a-good-attitude-can-lead-to-great-work/s-kaagl
Focus is tough and there will always be slip ups, but they are both necessary and unavoidable.Ā They let you know if you are on the right track or the wrong track.Ā Your āmediatorā just needs to determine which ones are dream based, and which are fear based.Ā
Focus arrives but then can easily dissipate.Ā Thatās when fear steps in.Ā Will I never be good enough?Ā What about bills?Ā Letting down my family?Ā Theyāre all gonna laugh at you!Ā etc etc.
Itās just the way it is.Ā Itās how you DEAL with it that matters.Ā People beat themselves up for having emotions or fear.Ā To me, itās just part of the game.Ā Itās when you allow them to dictate your life is when you should be mad at yourself.Ā But I allow them to happen.Ā If itās a particularly bad episode and if I have to, I let myself throw me a pity party.Ā Iām allowed a day for it.Ā Feel bad, mope around, throw over a blanket and play a video game until my eyes bleedā¦..Ā Pity Party, woohoo, invitation for 1 pleaseā¦.
And then the party is over.Ā Time to get up, attack it, and beat it.Ā In any way I can.Ā Little by little or jumping into the deep end.Ā Just whatever I can tackle.Ā Thatās different for everyone.
So we all go through it.Ā I dealt with it how I deal with everything.Ā All pieces of your life get moments.Ā But itās up to you to dictate how long each moment lasts.Ā Sooner or later, as things get easier to manage, the moments get to last longer (the good), get shorter (the bad), or come back once a year to decimate your ego (the ugly).Ā I realized long ago that any decision that doesnāt deal with bodily harm or injury is fine.Ā You can pretty much reverse anything you decide from a job, where you live, what to eat, or who to trust.Ā You can fix any of that.Ā You just gotta make the effort to re adjust when itās had itās moment.
But it happens.Ā Focus on little steps if you are in the middle of one.
You can do this.
If I can and continue to, I know you can too.
Good luck
Cheers,
Bean
Itās still Fanart Friday somewhere!
Ms. Shawna Mills, aka LazyMills has been on my radar for some time. Hailing from my hometown of NYC, the soft spokenĀ 2D animator/concept designerās work does a lot of the talking with itās loud, boisterous and āIDGAFā treatment to shape laws and rules. Sheās one of my favorite people working and sheās one of the few ladies of color in animation who has their own voice.Ā
