Hey, I want to get started in origami, but I'm not sure about what kind of paper to get... would regular construction paper be good for a beginner? And does it matter whether it's square or rectangular? Any information would be helpful, thanks!
Oh wow! First get ready for a wonderful adventure!
In some ways paper choice is a very personal thing some people like crisper papers, some softer. Paper choice can also be dictated by the model you want to fold. I wouldn't recommend construction paper. It's very soft and pretty fragile so trying to make sharp creases will just shred your paper.
Most designs, certainly most beginner designs call for square paper. You can absolutely make your own square paper if you want. There isn't anything wrong with using the origami paper you will find at your local craft store. Assuming you're in the US you should be able to find a Michaels or similar sort of place close to you. They'll sell pretty, inexpensive, packets of origami paper. I've noticed that some of the larger bookstores also sell origami books and will usually have a small selection of paper packs.
You could also order online, I'm a fan of Origami USA and Paperjade
While small sizes of paper are usually cheaper, they will also be more challenging to work with. Try to find a packet of 6-10" paper, larger is easier at first!
Good luck and send us pictures!
