Wilde Valentines: The Photoset.
There are romantic memories, and there is the desire of romanceâthat is all. Our most fiery moments of ecstasy are mere shadows of what somewhere else we have felt, or what we long someday to feelâŠSometimes I think the artistic life is a long and lovely suicide, and am sorry that it is so.
Oscar Wilde, about his estranged marriage to Constance Lloyd.
Oscar Wilde was born 161 years ago today. He was one of the first writers I felt a real affinity with and I have been a voracious fan ever since. I hoped to produce a new piece for the occasion, but ran out of time. Instead, I will share work from the last few years. Â
As he was the master of quotables I will also leave a few of my favorites here:
âYou have a wonderful personality. Develop it. Be yourself. Donât imagine that your perfection lies in accumulating or possessing external things. Your perfection is inside of you. If only you could realise that, you would not want to be rich. Ordinary riches can be stolen from a man. Real riches cannot. In the treasury-house of your soul there are infinitely precious things, that may not be taken from you.â âOscar Wilde, The Soul of Man Under Socialism
âKnow thyselfâ was written over the portal of the antique world. Over the portal of the new world, âBe thyselfâ shall be written.â âOscar Wilde, The Soul of Man Under Socialism
âKeep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring.â â Oscar Wilde, in conversation

Happy Birthday Oscar Wilde.
Youâre still relevant, donât worry.Â
âIt is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.â
So, itâs Oscar Wildeâs Birthday
I thought youâd like to know. You may now celebrate accordingly.
But first I shall share with you this photo and this story
The caption is the best part. From the Salome (Play) entry on Wikipedia:
âAlice Guszalewicz as Salome in the Richard Strauss opera, c. 1910. Richard Ellmann misidentified this photograph in his 1987 biography as âWilde in costume as Salome,â the error being finally corrected in 2000.[14]â
So, go and celebrate Oscar Wildeâs birthday with this photo that isnât a picture of him.
"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written or badly written.â   Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891, preface
Happy Birthday to Oscar Wilde (October 16, 1854)
Happy birthday, Oscar Wilde! A toast, to the legacy of excess, class, dandies, and Sir Henry Wotton. May the Fleurs du mal bloom evermore~
