50 Days of Belle: Day 8

“Oh–so I’m to believe that you were simply wandering about so far away from home and found yourself here?”

As unlikely a scenario that was, this stranger did seem to be genuinely lost. Furthermore, she didn’t seem to recognize her, nor did she seem very intimidated by her green skin unlike the majority of the Ozians. While Elphaba didn’t let her guard down, she did set aside her sarcasm for the moment.

“I can’t claim to own this place, so I wouldn’t call it trespassing. Where are you from?”

The green woman had to admit that she was rather curious about where the anti-Wicked Witch propaganda hadn’t yet spread.

“Is that such an impossible scenario?” She shot back. “There is no shame in getting lost, after all.”

But at the notable softening of the other woman’s tone, she sighed. “Still, I apologise. I come from a small kingdom - you’re... Unlikely to have heard of, honestly - in a land called Misthaven. You might know that by its other name, the Enchanted Forest.”

Belle paused for a moment, before adding: “I crossed the border into Oz with a trading party I came to know, but I’m alone now. What I know of this land I know from books, and they appear to have been wildly outdated ones at that.”

To her surprise, this stranger didn’t immediately scream and bolt in the opposite directions. “A likely story,” Elphaba muttered to herself as she glared at the woman, attempting to size her up. So far, the stranger has made no comment about her green skin, and she also hasn’t called her out as the Wicked Witch of the West. Perhaps she was genuinely lost and lived under a rock (which explained why she wasn’t terrified at the sight of the green witch).

“This isn’t exactly a popular location for hiking.”

Not that the woman looked like she was dressed appropriately for hiking anyway. She replied sarcastically, placing her free hand on her hip.

“What are you doing out here?”

The sarcasm wasn’t lost on Belle, but she stood her ground all the same - both figuratively and literally. She wasn’t going to be intimidated, no matter how much the other woman glared in her direction.

“I was looking for somewhere to rest for the night, but as I said - I’ve no idea where I am.” Irritation had crept into her voice, and she took the briefest of moments to bring that under control again. This was the only other person she had seen for miles, it wasn’t an opportunity she could afford to waste.

“I truly didn’t mean to disturb you - or trespass, if that’s what I’m doing. I’m not familiar with this land.”

{ The weekend has finally rolled around (after the week I’ve had health-wise I could not be happier about that fact), and I’m intending to use it to get caught up on… Well, on all my blogs if I’m being entirely honest. I’ll be flitting off and on here throughout today, but hopefully by the time I go to bed tonight everything should be done!

The green woman had been scavenging the forest for certain plants detailed in her books. The Animal resistance group didn’t have the luxury of proper hospitals like the Wizard’s men did. Instead, those like Elphaba had to rely more on homemade remedies and potions. Squat in front of a bush, she glanced about her before beginning to pick at the berries.

“Who’s there?!”

Turning with a start, Elphaba grabbed her broom and jumped to her feet when she heard someone call out to her. Her eyes quickly found a woman she’d never met before staring at her from just ten feet away. Surely the sight of her verdigris would send this stranger screaming and fleeing in terror. That’s how most, if not all, of the Ozians reacted to this notorious Wicked Witch after all.

When the other woman turned, Belle took half a step backwards - though not because of her appearance; truth be told, the fact that the stranger was green had barely registered. In that same moment, she lifted both her hands up so that they were level with her shoulders - palms empty and open, facing the other in the universal gesture of ‘I mean no harm’.

“I’m sorry,” A second apology, but this one was no less sincere. “I really didn’t mean to startle you. I didn’t know there was anyone else here, I’m-- I’m very, very lost.”
