Clearly OOC

As some of you may know, I discovered a lump in my breast a few months ago and have been going through the process of getting tests and going to and from the hospital here in Korea. I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow.

I’m not really certain what else I’d like to say, other than to ask for maybe some good thoughts or encouragement or your best fanfic recommendations in my inbox?

I guess this is a heads-up for any active threads out there that there might be some inactivity. Uh. Yeah.

“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable,” she replied quietly, infusing a bit of a smile into her words. He felt bad, and that was her fault. So Riza needed to swallow her usual shame and make him happy. Anything else was wrong. 

“I don’t hug often,” was offered by way of explanation. It was true- not the truth of the situation, but true enough. “And I’m not good with physical things. But I must thank you  for putting up with me.”

“N-neither do I,” he replied softly. “It’s f-fine.” He stepped back, eyes still on his feet.

“I-I should go.”

Riza felt her heart start to break. It throbbed hotly in her chest, but her facade was intact. Quiet, small smile perched on her lips she offered one last reassurance- “You’re quite good at it,” before nodding.

She knew that all she was good for was perpetuating pain and hurting those she cared for. So it was simply a matter of making sure that hurt didn’t show through as she said, “Of course, Fuery. I’m sorry I detained you.”

He saluted, still not meeting her eyes, and fled, unsure of what had just happened and where exactly he was fleeing to. His feet found him in the bowels of Central HQ's circuit rooms, where the slight heat and the hum of the machines was calming.

Riza looked back up at him slowly, expression softening into something like awe as she regarded him. Her legs stopped trembling, and some of the shaking in her hands began to quiet enough that she was able to not squeeze her fingers so hard. 

He wasn’t brushing her off or telling her to be quiet- and the weight of expectation, the idea that someone not just wanted her to do something but believed that she was ‘capable… it almost made her dizzy with its newness.

“I-I’m not v-very good at things,” she told him in hushed tones, terrified that she might disappoint this kind man, “B-but I c-can try. I w-will- I will t-try.”

“That’s the spirit,” he replied encouragingly, and god, she was breaking his heart. It was like looking into a mirror, warped and distorted and with the details all shifted ‘roud but the same eyes, just the same. He had a chance here, a chance to give her something he’d never had; it was a chance to give back to her what the lieutenant and the team gave him a taste of.

“You will, Miss Riza, and that’s because you have a lion’s heart. N-nothing can stop you, not if you r-really try, sweetheart.” His own voice quavered ever so slightly, his own inhibitions coming into play. He finished the sentence anyways.

Riza couldn’t help it. Her lips twitched slightly and her eyes were glowing. She had no idea why Mister Kain was saying all of this, but her hand lifted to her chest and the idea that there was a little lion in there tickled her to the point of almost smiling. No one had ever said something like this to her- the way his voice went up, the lightness and warmth was all foreign but undeniably wonderful. 

She almost forgot for a moment that she needed to be home; because that would mean leaving him, and Riza most assuredly did not want to do that.

“Wow,” she breathed, scooting forwards slightly. Seized with a desperate need to make him feel as she did, Riza leaned with her hands on her knees and told him fervently, “Y-you too.”

"Thanks," he said, smiling, warmth flooding even the coldest corners of his memories. Drawn out of her shell, the little girl was almost close enough that he could see the slight sprinkling of freckles on her nose. As she clutched her hand to her chest, Kain copied the gesture.

"Sounds like we're both pretty wonderful, huh?"

“Miss Riza, there isn’t anything for you to be sorry for. I get scared sometimes too; someone very brave once told me that the sign of bravery is not being unafraid. It’s being scared and doing things anyways that makes you brave, okay?” Kain’s words were delivered softly, but with ultimate conviction.

Riza regarded him with wide eyes, her leg nervously twitching as it hung a few inches from the floor. He had given her space, and was speaking as if he didn’t wish she was somewhere far away. Surely the reprimands would come- but for now… for now this was…

Different.

Different enough that she cautiously, glancing at him the entire time to confirm that it was okay and allowed, reached out to take the offered candy. Riza didn’t eat it, but holding it- she’d never been given something like that before. Given something easily and without strings.

She was distracted from his calming presence by the fact that he said Central. Central- as in Central City; which must have been very far from home. The knowledge caused the panic to bubble again, this time more ferociously. 

“C-Central?” She asked without meaning too, entire face turning scarlet for a moment. “I- I don’t know- h-how I g-got here.” Nerves guided her to give him as much information as possible so that she might return home. “I l-live in the H-hawkeye house i-in Ashford- I-I’m R-riza. I n-need to get home.”

He nodded gently, the motion of his chin forward indicating that she should take it. Her words gave him pause; surely not-

If he reacted in any way, she would be frightened- so Kain did not react, other than to smile softly.

“Nice to meet you, Miss Riza from the Hawkeye House in Ashford. I need you to do something for me, okay, and then we can get you home, alright?” He could see the resemblance now, the straw color of her hair, the round eyes more innocent that he’d ever seen them; this was without a doubt a young Riza. How it was possible, Kain wasn’t sure, but for the sake of that face he would do anything.

“Take a couple of deep breaths for m-me, okay? Just in and out, and I’ll find a way to make you safe, okay?”

Kain breathed with her, setting a calm example even as his brain screamed at him that this was wrong, that there was something so viscerally wrong with this version of his Lieutenant. She was so quiet, so afraid, so like him it was horrifying; Kain knew what had forged his own shy silence and irrational anger bubbled within him at the thought of something similar happening to his friend.

She tried to ascertain if she had done something wrong, if something was off. But the man- Mister Fuery, if she had that right- seemed just as pleasant as he had been, and something about that caused her trembling to die down just a bit. Enough that her foot stopped tapping against the chair’s edge, at least, though she had to knot her hands in her lap to hide their shaking.

Nice? No one ever really liked her; they barely tolerated her the few times she’d interacted with people. But his voice was soft and sure enough, with a waver that Riza understood on a subconscious level- something she identified with. Wanted to protect in a way she didn’t know how.

Riza nodded. She could follow orders. She wouldn’t disappoint this man. In and out, in and out- slower and slower until her thoughts began to clear.

“Okay,” she murmured quietly, worrying at her chapped bottom lip. “Th-thank you.” That was even quieter, more afraid. “I-I- I’m s-sorry.”

“Central City, Amestris, The World, Earth, Milky Way Galaxy,” he replied gently. Kain rocked back on his heels to give her more space, but didn’t take back the extended piece of candy. It helped settle his nerves, peppermint, and even the scent of it grounded him; he had hoped it might do the same for this child.

The tech spared a moment to be thankful it was he who had found the child, not that any of his team members would have been any less than kind, but Kain had a feeling he could handle this delicately enough that they would both come out whole. He’d had enough experience to recognize that fear that echoed back out at him from her stutter that perhaps the others might not have.

“More specifically, Colonel Mustang’s office within Central City Headquarters. I’m Kain, if it pleases you, miss.”
