The writers of Yellowjackets really went "Let's create a witchy survivalist story about/for traumatized, mentally ill women and add a bunch of horror, female friendships, and homoerotic subtext" and I love them for that

#i am having SO MANY THOUGHTS about how this show handles women grieving#specifically because of this - including nat's father's accidental death we have FIVE INSTANCES of women who have not killed#but feel responsible for the injury or death of their loved one#and i think what is so so SO good about how yjs is doing this is that it comes down to women making two choices:#you have nat and misty and shauna who all decide to express their rage and be emotional and REACT#and with all three of them their action is directly aligned with the death of the person they react to - if nat hadn't pulled out the gun#if misty hadn't threatened crystal if shauna hadn't pushed back against jackie finally then it wouldn't have happened#they aren't responsible but they shoulder the burden#and then you have tai and lottie and shauna again who all decide to ignore and repress their feelings and NOT ACT#and in these cases their inaction is what is directly aligned with the death (or near death) of their loved one#if lottie had understood her vision if tai had accepted she was losing herself if shauna had just gone down and apologized#they too are not responsible but they ALSO shoulder the burden#yellowjackets does such a great job of showing that women are damned if they do and damned if they don't:#our two choices in life are to push back or to stay quiet - be a problem or be a doormat#and then they say IT DOESN'T MATTER because the world will punish women however it can#we socialize women to take on the responsibility of pain even when we're grieving#and yellowjackets shows that so beautifully and so repeatedly bc like every other theme on this show it's a cycle
