HaHe short her a curious glance, wondering what was going through her mind as he tossed his wallet into the side of the door and started the car. âI should hope so, considering itâs all I have to offer for reassuring your poor, wayward self,â he said, amused sarcasm heavy in his tone. âYou could try to use your crappy pocket knife for a key here. If it fails, I suppose itâs just further proof you need an upgrade.â Hm. Such a mundane question, such a mundane answer. âMedical science and med school. Iâm a surgeon at the hospital. That reminds me - there are bandages in the first aid kit in the glove box. If you want to deal with your hand unaided.â
Hazel considered retorting about how her knife was old but she still knew how to use it but she bit her tongue instead and smiled. She wondered exactly how much of a damsel in distress he thought she was. âYouâre a surgeon?â She exclaimed, rooting around in his glove box for a bandaid. âYou donât seem boring enough to have a job like that.â She covered her hand with the bandaid and looked back up at him. âIâd expect sky diver or serial killer with a personality like yours,â she joked.

Person character secretly admires: Her brother.Â
Most important person in characterâs life before story starts: Herself
Why? sheâs just now finding her way through life.
Danielle understood, she had occasionally witness the love the boys felt for cars that Hazel was referring to. âWell, no matter how many times boys play with the motor, every car meets its in sooner or later.â After a beat, the bunyip looked around and patted the closest surface of the car. âHopefully, later.â She chuckled. As she changed the stations, she didnât look for any particular songs. Once she found a station that played a song she didnât recognize but that reminded her of the songs she would often listen in the â80s, she stopped. Better that than nothing. âAh, yes. Moved out of the family home to get closer to my job, you know.â She replied with a smile. âYou?â She asked, more to filla possible silence than out of curiosity.
Hazel became super focused on her driving all of the sudden. She wasnât a reckless driver she just didnât necessarily pay the best of attention when she was driving. Focusing back in on conversation she answered, âYeah, I left town for a while and when I came back it just didnât feel right to live with my parents anymore and I wouldnât dream of living with my brother.â While talking Hazel had become slightly distracted and didnât quite notice the stop sign in front of her in enough time to make an easy stop. Her cheeks reddened with embarrassment as she felt the little jolt of her brakes working over time. âSorry,â she laughed as she tried to quickly cover herself. âWhere do you work?â
It only took a moment for him to hand over his wallet, eyebrow raised. Inside was his drivers license and work ID for the hospital. âWith luck thatâll meet your no doubt boundless standards.â He did know she was kidding, just saw more enjoyment in playing along than in ignoring the banter. âJust being polite, Hazel.â He shook his head, dismissing her thanks as he closed the door behind her, walking around to slip into the drivers seat. âFor the record, if you try to steal this, as you say, âmuch nicer rideâ, I will go to extreme lengths to defend it. Itâs the only thing I have left of my uni years,â he claimed, mockingly grave and not meaning a word of it.
Hazel still didnât quite know how to handle someone who didnât just take her attitude. âThat should do I guess,â she said as she handed his things back to him. Hazel became a little more comfortable for some reason she could not explain as she sat in his car. âI mean I doubt a crappy pocket knife could double as a key for a car this nice.â She sat there for a moment trying to watch the passing scene in the dark. âWhat did you go to uni for?â she asked.
Pierce pursed his lips and glanced at Hazel. âI went for business.â Pierce chuckled. âMy father owned his own business and I was going to learn how to run it one day. I was going to take over the business.â Pierceâs smile faltered slightly as he thought about it. âI never finished my masters degree though.â
âSo you havenât been to many places other than this one then?â Pierce asked, raising his eyebrows at her. âIâm from Australia but I traveled a little bit before coming here.â Pierce said. Traveling was not the right word for it. Tracking was. He didnât necessarily enjoy himself during the traveling that he did do.Â
Hazel looked down at the table remembering her own time in college. âAt least you made it that far,â she said with a half hearted smile, tucking a long strand of hair behind her ears. âAlthough business sounds a little too... square for me,â she said, half joking.Â
Hazel looked back over her shoulder at the kitchen and saw her cook finishing Pierceâs order. âBe right back,â  she said as she jumped up and moved towards the kitchen. Quickly, she plated his meal and brought it out to him. âEverything look good?â she asked, still in waitress mode.Â
He snorted at her comeback, amusement in the look he gave her. Girl had snark, he had to admit. âNot bad,â he murmured, opening the passenger door of the car for her before turning back to give her more attention. âDevon Prescott. Do you need to see my ID to confirm Iâm not lying?â He was kidding, though the taunt was directed more at the idea of that being helpful than at her specifically. So far as he could see, having a card that corroborated a name meant next to nothing. âOr are you going to stand there until I seem more welcoming?â
Hazel raised an eyebrow at him, âIâm actually going to need to photocopy that for my files when I get home.â She had to admit she was having fun with the back and forth between her and him.  Hazel thought about retorting about how welcome he seemed but didnât want to push her luck and  As she stepped to the car she stopped in front of him. âThanks Devon,â she quipped as she stepped in. Hazel began to take in the car as she sat in the seat. âI guess today hasnât all been bad, my car broke down but I scored a much nicer ride over all,â she laughed.Â
Pierce watched her as she moved from the table to the counter to shout at the cook. He smiled at her as she sat back down at the table. He took a sip of his coffee and nodded. âOh, a group of friends? Thatâs good. I havenât been to a bonfire in such a long time. Maybe since collegeâŚâ Pierce ran a hand through his hair and shrugged. He didnât think back on his past much just because it always led to one thing. His sister.
âI thought it would be better when trying to adjust if I had a job.â Pierce admitted. âI like it. I get to socialize and talk to strangers and learn more about the town all at the same time.â Pierce smiled. He was still trying to find out information about the town so he was being as social as possible.Â
Hazel felt like inviting him to the bonfires but something stopped her. She shook her head and told herself that maybe if this went well sheâd do it by the end of the little dinner. âCollege? What did you go for?â She asked very interested. Hazel loved new adventures and to her college was just another adventure in everyoneâs book.Â
Hazel looked back to the kitchen to make sure his order hadnât come out yet. Assured that she had another couple of minutes she settled back in the booth and continued the conversation, âIâve lived here pretty much my whole life, if youâve got any questions I might have some answers.â
Devon shrugged absently, disinterested in her polite friendliness. Heâd been there too long and been much to patient to feign some inability to help. Perhaps that was what drove him to gesture towards his own car, a ten year old sedan parked not far behind her SUV, keeping his wan smile fixed in place. âIâll need your address before I can drop you off, but as long as you actually get whatever you need out of your⌠that, before you leave, I can give you that ride. If you need advice on a car worth buying, the only specific input I can offer is ânot thatâ.â
Hazelâs smile hardened a bit. Her car was a piece of shit but it was her piece of shit. She leaned into her car and grabbed a backpack before she turned back around. Wishing that she wasnât still in her work uniform she moved towards his car. âI live on Westway Street, just a few blocks away from the bar,â she said, ânext time my parents buy a car they want to pass down Iâll try to keep it in mind,â she joked. âMy nameâs Hazel by the way,â she said as she stopped and turned towards him, waiting for him to give his name.Â
âGreat.â Pierce said with a wide smile. He was starving; he had hardly eaten all day. âCould I have a stack of pancakes, some scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage?â Pierce asked as he pushed the menu towards her. âAnd if you want anything you can tell him itâs for me. Iâm sure youâre hungry after working and being on your feet for so long.âÂ
âI thought I was going to just be passing through but⌠I decided recently that I was going to stay. I got a job as a bartender and I am starting to catch up with a friend of mine that I met during my travels. His name is Devon, have you met him yet?â Pierce asked. âHeâs some hot shot surgeon now. When I knew him, he was still in medical school.â
Hazel committed the order to memory and quickly spat it to the cook before returning to the table. She smiled to herself at how kind this stranger was being to her. âYou know I might have met him in passing but I usually stick to my group.â She sat back down, âItâs not a horrible place to be for a while. I get out of town every chance I get though,â she chuckled. âIâd much rather be at a bonfire in the woods than here,â she gestured at the diner.Â
âBartending isnât too bad. Sounds like youâve started to settle in. Meeting people and getting a job is number one.â She laughed at herself and blushed a bit at the way she had phrased it. Reaching out to people wasnât really Hazelâs strong suit.Â
âThe secret is keeping it somewhere you can always find it. I have mine in a pocket of this bag. I take it out only when I need it and I⌠try to remember to put it back, so itâs always there when I need it.â Once she had gotten in the car, Danielle put her seatbelt on. She looked up when she heard the noise of a car that wasnât starting. âWell, itâs a car⌠with history, isnât it?â She said, avoiding to say the word old. âI hope for you I really wonât have to,â she laughed, âIâm not strong.â She could be quick in her movements, but bunyips did not have increased strenght. Since she didnât train, either, she was not stronger than your average human. While Danielle didnât mind having a conversation, she did expect the ride to be a silent one. âI will just change station until we found something decent, if thatâs okay?âÂ
âYou could say history. This car has been in the family for a while. You know for how much boys love cars youâd think theyâd be more careful with them.â Hazel laughed at the girl in her passenger seat, âdonât worry, Iâm pretty strong, weâd be fine.â Hazel nodded at the girlâs question and sat there for a moment as she listened to the changing of the station. As she neared the part of town the other girl was from she asked, âDo you live by yourself?â
Pierce smiled at the girl as he placed the coffees in front of him and sat down. He took the menu from her and glanced it over. âDo you serve breakfast at this hour?â He asked. He was really craving some pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Pierce picked up the coffee mug and took a sip of the black coffee. âThank you for the coffee.â He smiled at her.
âYou are correct. I am originally from Australia.â Pierce said, grinning widely. âBut after a while I decided to do some traveling. You know, trying to have some adventures now that Iâm getting older.â Pierce shrugged his shoulders. None of that was true but he was good at lying. Every town he had been to was just to find the dhampir, not to enjoy it. âOh, my name is Pierce, by the way. If you plan on staying, you should probably know that.âÂ
âYouâre in luck we serve breakfast all day. Are you the classic breakfast kinda person?â Hazel listened to him as he talked about traveling. She longed to travel over far distances and romanticized far off people and places. âIâve always wanted to travel but the best I can do is an occasional camping trip,â she laughed. Â âAre you passing through or sticking around?â she asked, somewhat looking
Hazel stood up and looked towards the kitchen, âWell Pierce, if you want to eat tonight I should probably get your order in,â she joked, âweâve got an impatient cook and i wouldnât want you to get half coked food.âÂ
Danielle laughed along side the other girl. âActually, my brother doesnât force me to do things either. Even though he probably wishes he could. Itâs justâ this time I let him, because the spare key wasnât a bad idea.â If William had his way, she might end up living in a bubble. She took a step back and smiled, when Hazel opened the car door. âYou know the italian restaurant in the west side of town? My apartment building is in front of it.â She said after she got into the car. âWell, thank you. Yeah, you are right, it does.â Danielle had walked around town at night plenty of times, but indeed it wasnât the safest place.
Hazel smiled at her car âSpare key, not a bad idea at all.â She did know the little Italian restaurant the other girl had been talking about. Getting in her car, Hazel shoved the key in the ignition. As she turned the key she heard her car make a pitiful noise. âNo not today,â she hissed under her breath at the car. Finally it started. âThatâs just a thing it does sometimes,â she said with an embarrassed smile, âI promise you wonât have to push.â Hazel sat there trying to act normal, she didnât hang out with new people very often and was known to push people away. âDo you want to pick the radio station?â she asked trying to be polite as the rickety car bumped over the roads.
She pursed her lip slightly, ânot alwaysâ she murmured. It came with the job - the inevitable loss of life. âHonestly, I donât mind and this hunk of junk as you call it, is one step ahead of mine. See here, isnât it lovely?â she asked, gesturing to the empty space beside them. With rent, bills and the amount of work she did, a car wasnât a necessity in her life although on rainy nights, she regretted her decisions. She grinned and shook her hand, âIâm Annora and if I killed someone, they probably had it comingâ she winked, before hopping into the car as gestured.Â
Hazel laughed at the young woman in front of her and hopped in the car herself. Driving to the hospital would be no problem as Hazel had been there herself countless times. âThe interior isnât much better,â she joked as the car struggled to start. Hazel began to wonder if she had ever actually seen this girl at the hospital on one of her visits. âHow long have you been at the hospital?â she asked as the car finally started with a low rumble.Â
He smirked down at her, not letting her have the chance to think her slip-up had passed him by. Of course such a mistake could be attributed to being caught off guard, but he wouldnât for a second believe someone who screwed up when caught unawares was without their weaknesses. âEven the smallest wounds can end up infected. You never know what the consequences will be.â He watched on with mild curiosity as the engine failed to turn over. âWhat do you know, the piece of shit has died.â
âI live to serve,â he informed her, only slightly sarcastic. It would be so easy to catch her off guard a second time, retrieve the switchblade from his own car and sneak back up again. No, he told himself. Control. âWhatâll it be, jump start or lift back into town?â
The urge rose in Hazel to be sarcastic toward the man in front of her but as she was in a position to need help she decided to hold her tongue for once. A dilemma came across her mind; it was late and she knew she shouldnât accept a ride from a stranger but at this point her car probably wouldnât take a jump.Â
She smiled politely up at him, âI donât think itâs going to respond to the jump start too well. Would it be to much trouble to ask for a ride?â It wasnât too far for Hazel to walk but her shift had been long and her feet hurt.Â
Pierce noticed that there werenât many people there at that hour. His eyes trailed to a girl, a waitress, that was sitting at a table sorting silverware. She looked tired, like she was ready to leave work. He wondered when she got off. Pierce pushed his backpack to the end of the booth against the wall before watching her put on a smile and walk to the table.
âHello there, Hazel.â Pierce offered her a wide smile. âIâd love a coffee, if you donât mind.â Pierce hadnât been to that restaurant before so he wasnât sure what the type of food that they made was, or which meal was better than the rest. âYou could also grab a coffee for yourself and join me here, at the table?â Pierce raised an eyebrow at her, wondering what she would say. He normally didnât like company but he hadnât really talked to many of the locals since coming to town and he wanted to get to know people better. âWhat do you say? Iâll buy the coffee, I donât mind.â
Hazel was taken back for a second. It wasnât every day that she was asked by a customer to join them. She considered how likely it was that she would get into trouble and decided the risk wasnât too high. âIâll be right back with that,â she said as she walked off with a smile. Hazel headed back to the table with two coffeeâs and a bowl full of individual creamers, and a menu in her hands. She sat them down and then sat across from the boy.Â
"I figured you might want to see the menu,â she said as she smiled, âThe bacon burger is a classic.â Hazel felt awkward at first, she wasnât exactly the most approachable person in town and wasnât used to it. She looked down at her work clothes and blushed at the unflattering dark green shirt she was wearing. Quickly she looked back to this unfamiliar boy. âYou from out of town?â She asked.
Pierce had been having a hard time sleeping lately. After what happened back at home, his sole purpose was to find the dhampir that killed his sister. He hoped his friend Devon would help him but only time would tell.Â
He had been awake for around thirty-eight hours by the time he was ready to take a break and actually enjoy something to eat. Pierce left his place and made his way to one of the restaurants in town at around eight at night. He was starving, not having eaten all day. He also brought his backpack that contained files and notes of the dhampir.Â
Pierce walked into the restaurant and took a seat at one of the booths. He yawned, knowing he needed to order some more coffee to pull another all nighter. He drummed his fingers on the table, impatiently, waiting for a waitress to come take his order.
Hazel had been working a five hour shift and still wasnât done. She hated working late nights. Hazel would fantasize about being outside around a bonfire with a few of her friends, some booze, and some good music. Looking at the clock she sighed. The last few hours seemed to creep by the slowest.
Deciding that she wanted to get some time off of her feet, Hazel sat down and began to fold napkins around silverware. It was then that she saw a boy walk in and sit himself. She was used to late night customers like this, kids about her age that would stumble in half asleep and drink coffee until they had enough caffeine in their system to motivate them to finish whatever harrowing task had put them in that state.Â
Putting her best work face on she got up and walked to his table after finishing one more set of silverware. Reaching the table she started the way she always started, âHi my name is Hazel and Iâll be your waitress tonight. Can I start you off with some coffee maybe?â She smiled warmly as she looked at her customer. He looked a little worse than the usual crowd which somehow softened her even more.Â
âBeing paranoid is not always bad. Sometimes, itâs what keeps you safe.â Danielle smiled, relating to the girlâs next words. âI get it. Iâm more disorganized and messy than forgetful, but I do forget stuff around too. Thatâs why my brother forced me to get a spare car key.â She admitted. Dani had been walking around, trying to get a nice picture taken like she did so many evenings. She had been distracted, trying to figure out from what roof she would get the perfect view and she hadnât realized how far she had gone from her appartment. A storm was approaching, though. After considering her options, she decided to accept. âEhm â if itâs not troubling for you, Iâd accept a ride.â
Hazel let out a laugh, âI donât think my brother could force me to do anything without a fight.â She swung the car door open for the girl in front of her, âWelcome to Hazelâs car service, Iâm Hazel and this is my crappy car. Where can we take you?â She chuckled to herself and added, âBut seriously itâs no problem at all, it looks crappy out here.â After all girls gotta stick together right? Hazel smiled hoping to make sure she wasnât acting weird or off putting.Â
