Kris shrugged again at Elric’s promise of protection… I can protect myself, you know. However, they kept that little quip to themself; it’d be better to try and get along, considering the pair were going to be a team. The less quarreling between the two, the better.
“Due to the instability of the timeline,” she answered, “It would be best if I sent you there myself; do not worry about the location, I will handle that. Furthermore, I will do my best to mask your arrival to buy you the element of surprise. It would be very troublesome if you had to expend a large amount of energy on that yourself, or made an error and were confronted without any chance at formulating a plan.” Clearly she had no intention of giving the alchemist an exact coordinate, and the Goddess did have a point. Whether Elric liked it or not, one of them was much more experienced than the other– and it really wasn’t him.
“Go collect your things, I will wait here for you.” Apparently that was the end of the conversation, as far as the Seer was concerned.
Kris was vaguely amused by seeing their mentor shot down so expertly, but hid it with a forced solemn expression. Like usual, they didn’t really feel like picking sides. Plus, they had a feeling their own input wasn’t exactly expected here. It was definitely better to sit back and watch, at least for now.
Elric didn’t look happy with this plan, but he felt like there was no point arguing it right now at least... For once he’d obey the Seer’s word.
“ ....Fine. “ The alchemist noticed Kris being a butt about being protected again, but still met him with a little smile. “ Wait here, I’ll be back soon. “ That was unless Kris needed some things as well.
With that, the angel headed off, grabbing what he needed, and returning to the two.

If Elric thinks it’s worth going, I’ll go too. Their mentor’s affirmative answer sealed the deal; Kris managed a confident smirk, nodding agreement. Maybe the teen wasn’t sure what exactly they’d be dealing with– and it certainly didn’t sound like anything good– but… They weren’t about to let the alchemist handle it alone, that was for sure. Especially if their opponent was capable of controlling time itself. Kris clenched one fist firmly… They’d abused that power in their own timeline many, many times. If the kid could save someone else from making the same mistake… That would be worthwhile, right?
Anyway, I’m one of the ‘heroes of light’ or whatever. This’ll be nothing.
The Seer considered Elric’s question, thinking things out… “Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with these worlds. Their unstable temporal composition makes them… Difficult to read. However, judging by the nature of these timelines, the one responsible for these ‘Resets’ is most likely a human of the same variety as Kris. I cannot be certain of the limits to their abilities, though I imagine they will be somewhat similar.” It made sense; Kris had been the most ‘Determined’ creature in their timeline, and humans were supposed to be chock full of that energy.
Yet, for some reason, the idea that their opponent was like Kris actually made the teen even more apprehensive than they already were. All this time, they’d wanted to meet another person like them, who shared their powers– but… They hadn’t wanted it to be like this.
“Regardless,” she resumed quietly, “The sooner you are able to go, the better. Do you need to pick anything up before you head off? I would send more backup, but that could easily attract… Unwanted attention.”
Elric glanced to Kris, noticing his enthusiasm. At the very least one of them was looking forward to this disaster vacation. Finally he shoves his hands into his pockets, glancing at the Seer...
“ ...I think I have everything I need in my room, I’ll go grab it and head off. Kris on the other hand- “
He closed his eyes for a moment, then looked down.
“ No ...It’s alright, I’ll protect him. ” He was vague... then smiled at the little guy, and turned back to the seer. “ Where are we headed? ”

Once the two had both taken a seat, the Seer gave them each a grave look, as though trying to instill the seriousness of the situation with her gaze alone. “As you may have guessed,” she answered firmly, “there are many other worlds not unlike Kris’s, in which a being imbued with a particular energy– ‘Determination’– is capable of altering the flow of time. While that ability can manifest magical powers outside those timelines, it cannot affect time itself… Hence why none of those powers will work here.”
Kris seemed to perk up a bit, though the bored-looking teen’s chin didn’t lift from its place on their crossed arms. They were pretending not to listen just for the sake of being a pain, but it was a pretty obvious ruse. Truthfully, they’d been wondering for a while why their Resets wouldn’t work at the Order– or, in fact, much of anywhere outside their own world. This certainly explained a lot, at any rate.
“Most of those timelines are exceptionally unstable,” the woman continued quietly, “But after a time, they sort themselves out, so-to-speak. However…” Here we go, Kris commented silently, watching the lady with a dull, apathetic expression. “Recently, one timeline in particular has been detected that… Well…” For once, the Seer seemed to be at a loss for words. Kris glared at her for a long moment, then finally decided it was time to prod.
“What?” they asked with an air of faint impatience.
“The timeline is continuously resetting, always after the same exactly amount of time. A perfect loop, if you will.” Catching Kris’s unimpressed expression, the Seer decided to elaborate… “Furthermore, there is a great deal of suffering occurring in that world, for reasons that… I cannot be certain of. However, it seems likely that whoever is conducting these Resets is responsible.”
“… So that’s why you need me? To Reset on them?” The woman shook her head.
“When two beings of equal Determination are at odds with one another, they cancel each other out.” Now Kris was beginning to understand… The kid’s eyes widened as the implications sunk in. “As such… Your mission is to catch the one responsible, and stop them before their actions damage the surrounding fabric of time-space beyond repair. And, if it is at all possible, save the inhabitants from this neverending purgatory.”
Elric’s expression darkened, and his heart sunk. Someone resetting the timeline over and over, and the mentions of suffering? ...The alchemist had ideas, but he wasn’t sure he even wanted to consider them. Then again, it didn’t seem like he’d have a choice, since he was going to go headlong into this world and figure out what was going on. “ ...Just great.”
He was certainly used to alternate universes by now, but he had a grim feeling that this one was going to be a bit more ...overwhelming.
“ So, Kris is just gonna tag along then, to make sure this bastard can’t reset anymore..? ...Makes sense, I guess. ” He folds his arms, placing a finger on the desk.
“I’ll- ...” Elric glanced to Kris for a second. “ We’ll do our best to save these people. And stop this asshole, whoever he is... Maybe even save him if that’s the case, though I somehow doubt we’ll be let off without some kind of sick bullshit going on. ”
His eyebrows furrowed...
“ Is there ...anything else we need to be aware of? ”

Having Elric by their side definitely helped Kris feel a bit more at ease with the situation… The kid gave a firm, resolute nod, grateful for their friend’s support. In all honesty, there was no way the teen would’ve succeeded in the Dark World without their friends’ help– and they were sure this would be much the same. Yet, they were also certain that, as long as the pair stuck together… Everything would turn out okay, no matter what happened.
Kris trotted along after their mentor, down the Order’s vast halls… Then finally there was a turn, and another, and they came to the meeting hall’s doorway. Looks exactly like I expected. While Kris had never visited this particular space before, no doubt the ornate wooden table with its dozen chairs was quite familiar to the alchemist by now. The Seer was currently lingering at the head of it, and had clearly been pacing back and forth while waiting for the two to arrive. However, she stopped as they appeared in the doorway, bowing her head for a moment in acknowledgment.
“Take a seat,” she instructed them quietly, “I will attempt to keep this brief, but I must make sure you are both fully prepared for the mission at hand.” Kris just shrugged carelessly in response, flopping into one of the chairs and crossing their arms on the table. They already looked about ready to just sleep through her explanation– and well, it wasn’t surprising. The kid didn’t stay awake for most of their classes, either.
The Goddess sighed. This was not going to be a fun conversation.
Seeing that little smile from the kid somehow gave Elric the courage he needed to make it through whatever the road had in store for them.
“ Geez, you’re really eager to see me of all people? ” Elric had noticed the Seer anxiously awaiting their arrival and couldn’t help but tease a little bit... Knowing that if she was nervous, then it must have been bad.
He could only hope it didn’t involve the god damn ether again.
Nevertheless, he guides his apprentice into the room, then takes a seat in front of her, leaning back and narrowing his golden eyes.
“ ....Alright ...So what’s up? “
