Roller derby attracts all kinds of people. There are the skaters of course, and volunteers that make games happen with a minimum of fuss, but who exactly runs the games? The answer to that is officials.

We’re recruiting men and women to join our CoEd Roller Derby League to field new players for our Women’s team ‘Herts Breakers’ who are currently debuting in the British Championships and for our Men’s team ‘Ironborn Rollers’. Members of these teams will form the CoEd ‘A Team’.
Our 6 week basic skills course will teach new recruits the very basics of roller skating and roller derby skills, and an offer to become a member of FMRD.

Closer and Closer
i’m so excited!! I just came back from Sunday afternoon training where I managed to do 21 LAPS IN 5 MINUTES. I am so pleased with myself right now. It was at the end of our 2 hour training session too, so my legs were burning and I nearly blacked out when they finally blew the whistle for 5 minutes but I did a 3 lap PB and got over 20 laps (the minimum requirement for fresh meat to move into the rookie team in my league) for the first time ever!! I would like to think it’s because they finally let the fresh meat have a turn on the track without the rookies, so I only had to watch out for 3 other people, could actually attempt to skate the diamond and wasn’t too intimidated to do crossovers in the corners.
Everything is just falling into place for me right now!
We did a lot of work on transitions too with our new coach, and she taught us how to do pivot transitions, which I could actually do really easily the first go. My normal transitions just keep getting better and better too, I hardly ever stumble now but I do still need to work on doing them at faster speed.
We have training on Wednesday this week, then we’re off until the following Wednesday because of stupid Easter. But I do have a derby friend coming up from interstate over the long weekend so we’re going to go to the outdoor track together to do a bit of messing around, so that will be fun. I might see if some of my derby friends from fresh meat want to come out on Sunday after a social skate too since we won’t have training like normal.
People also started calling me “Riot” and “Meow” at training, which was really cool. I prefer Riot but the other freshies insist on Meow, so I will be both interchangeably.
Now I am in desperate need of a shower and some stretching.
