I’ve heard a lot of things about The Pelican Club, but have never had the opportunity to go. I am also pretty bad at remembering to book tables and end up just turning up to places in the hope of getting a table, and this is not the kind of place where that can fly. That being said, one of my best friends had this past Saturday off, which never happens, (she still works in a pub) and we decided to try the place out. I booked a table, amended the booking when they could not fit us in at the time we wanted, and started planning what I was going to wear (because, of course, that was very important).
On arriving, I had a minor panic as when you open the door there is a large black curtain obstructing the way. As I attempted to battle my way through the fabric, a hostess appeared, pulling back the curtain and letting us in to the venue. And I loved it instantly!
When we sat down at the table, we were handed menus and told the food specials and I marveled at the way the place made you feel like you had been transported to a different time. The staff were all smart, dressed in black, and despite still being early there was some live jazz. After looking a the menu for a long time because I felt spoiled for choice, we finally made our order.
Firstly, I loved the name of some of the cocktails, which is why my first choice was the Nina Simone. Danielle played it safe with Pornstar Martini (though it was one of the better versions of the drink I have tried).
Dinner followed, and it was spectacular. We shared a starter and went for some amazing pasta dishes for the main (I chose the special. I was too far away to take a picture of the board, but it consisted of sausage meat, cheese and a wonderful sauce). We opted out of dessert and went for more cocktails instead. My next choice was the Candy Apple Sour – after reading the description it was going to be either be revolting or amazing. It was most definitely the latter. Danielle opted for the tequila based cocktails, which were equally good, but I have always approved of tequila as a cocktail base – I just struggle to find places that can achieve success with the drink.
All in all, despite the place being so popular that we could only have the table for a limited time, it was one of nicest venues I have been to in recent memory. The service was great, the food and drink delicious, and as I sat and gossiped with my friend I could have been anywhere other than the centre of Nottingham. The spell was truly broken as we left and walked to the next place on the list (review of Coco Tang coming soon) but I would most definitely go again.
