Turkey Fry

This year, FUMC-Boerne, along with seven other local churches, will provide turkey dinners for 300 local families in need. Christian Men of Boerne will gather on Wednesday, November 25th at Kendall County Fair Grounds to fry the turkeys, assemble the dinners, & carry dinners to the cars of Hill Country Family Services clients. Help and prayers for this yearly event will be appreciated. To donate/help out or for questions, call Kevin Kite at 210-849-1047 or stop by the Turkey Fry table in the Narthex starting on November 1.

Preaching

Have you noticed a change in my preaching? It's finally improved, right? Seriously, I'm sure you have noticed one major change: I'm now preaching from a manuscript. Why would I make that change? During my Renewal Leave I prayed for God's guidance to lead me in ways that would improve my ministry to this church I love. At first, the thought of changing was difficult to even imagine. After all, I've preached without notes for around 32 years. Although there are pros and cons to both manuscript and not using notes, the pros for the former began to make sense (I'm often slow to figure out what God's trying to tell me!). One pro is that, hopefully, this will allow my mind to be more pastoral before and after services. Carrying a sermon in your mind (only) from about 5 in the morning until noon can be exhausting. Another pro is that it will allow me to offer you more scriptural exegesis – historical background, quotes, etc. Lastly, I have always wanted to try my hand at writing. No better way to begin practicing than by writing my sermons! I hope you find this change as beneficial to you as it has been to me. - Pastor Ricky

Humans of New York

Pastor Billie referenced Humans of New York this morning in her sermon. Here is a link to the blog: http://www.humansofnewyork.com Remember, Pastor Billie looked at scripture and used it to encourage us to love those deemed as the "least" and the "last" in society. The Humans of New York blog was started by someone who chose to not just get to know people inside of his circle, but to seek out and get to know everyone as far out of his circle as he could find. It is out of our comfort zone and sometimes scary for us to talk to others that might be outside of our normal friends or those that we might even think less of. The truth is, God doesn't call us to live a life of comfort. So get out there, and get uncomfortable church.

Special Statement from Bishop Dorff

To my brothers and sisters in Christ,

Last night was Wednesday night. Time to go to church. Time for prayer meeting. Time to see friends, pray and learn more about Jesus. And so it was, at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Emanuel AME Church is a flagship congregation in the denomination. Pastor’s Paragraph

As you read this article I have just begun my Renewal Leave. I want to say 'thanks' once again for your support in allowing me this valuable time to renew, refresh, and recharge. After 21 years it is exciting to look forward to my first Leave. We plan to visit family and travel to several national parks. But, the highlight will be spending thirty days in a secluded cabin in western Montana. Again, thanks for your support and making this great gift possible. During my Leave the Advisory Council for our potential satellite campus at Tapatio will be working to discern potential, establish a budget, identify a target start date, best time to worship, best style of worship, and many other items. This group will give our Administrative Board a presentation of their findings in September. We are fortunate that our Bishop strongly encourages us to locate potential satellite locations and, also, provide us financial support. In addition, we have anonymous donors offering support so no funding will be required of our home church. Living in a growing county we have a growing potential to reach new people! Lastly, please keep in mind your opportunity this summer to be part of our long-range planning. Colinasway plans to spend two to three days interviewing all members who would like to offer their suggestions. Please be listening during announcement time and reading your bulletin and newsletter for these dates. You will need to make a reservation! Interview times will be offered during both day and evening. If all continues as planned, the long-range goals will be presented to our congregation toward the end of this year. Informational meetings will follow and a Church Conference will be the final step to put our planning into action. I am beyond excited to know we will have defined strategy for the growing future that is before us. May God bless you all and I look forward to seeing you on September 8. — Ricky

Youth News from Kenne Woods

The Bash was incredible. Approximately 40 students had a great time playing bubble soccer, cow-tongue ultimate Frisbee, and swimming. Wes Cain won the root beer drinking contest. Jack Cammer won bobbing in whip cream for gummy worms. Tony and Janet Gibson prepared some incredible burgers and hot dogs.  Mike Coyne graciously drove the bus for us. Best of all Pastor Billie and Wayne Watts let us use there home for the occasion. Thanks to all!!  Introducing

Fifteen high school students and six adult leaders have committed to serving in Memphis, Tennessee for our High School Mission, June 20-27. We are leaving from the church at 4:30AM on Saturday June 20. We leave so early so we can worship @ Jacob’s Well at 6:00PM Saturday evening.  We are returning on the evening of Saturday the 27th. We will be doing roof repair, building a fence, leading soccer camps, basketball camps, art camps, and throwing about four block parties. We are attending a “Packing Party” on Friday the June 19 at University UMC. Some of us will get to do CPR…Compassion Party on the Road. For fun, we could be going to the zoo and a baseball game.  Inspiring

The lineup for UM Army is near completion, our Jr Hi mission trip. We will be serving in Manor, Texas. July 12-16. We are joining Fredricksburg and Bethany from Austin in housing repair, worship, games, kitchen duty, adventure, and much more! Graham and Luke Whidbee and Valerie Wosnig have been added to our team. We have a total of 15 students and 8 adult leaders. We expect God to transform lives in amazing ways for the folks in Manor and for us.  Imitating

District Event in July 6-7: On the 6th, we are going to Landa Park in New Braunfels for fun in the water and the sun Building demolition, painting, post hole digging and telephone pole setting, porch uprighting, window glazing, landscaping, Landa Park, worship with many churches in the Los Missiones conference. Grilla and the JOC’s will be preparing some of our meals.

Project Transformation

Transforming Lives Through Relationships

Monday through Thursday until July 30. This summer literacy program benefits local under-served children. It's never too late to sign up to be a Reading Buddy! Please go to the projecttransformation.org website, click on the link to the Rio Texas Conference, and it will guide you to the online registration. Even if you have not signed up, come anyway! The college interns leading the program will guide you and put you to work on that day. The first day you are a "buddy," you will need to arrive at the FLC by 9:30 am for orientation, and then you are ready to go! **If you are an FUMC member, please come see Janet O’Day to fill out a required Background Check form. We hope you will find some time—a little or a lot! — this summer to invest in the lives of our interns and children. You may find, in the end, that you, too, have been  transformed.

Youth News

Students Experiencing God’s Love to Love Others

Student Ministry has hired Sarah Matney to serve as Administrative Assistant. We are excited to have her join us on staff! Her previous work experience and love for people should prove to be a great asset to the ministry. Welcome aboard Sarah! She begins on June 1st.

We are going to Memphis, Tennessee for our High School Mission, June 20-27.  We are leaving at about 6:00AM on Saturday June 20. We are returning Saturday evening. Our play day will be on Friday the 19th. We will be doing roof repair, building a fence, soccer camp, basketball camp, and throwing 2 block parties.  Some of us will get to do CPR…Compassion Party on the Road.  For fun, we could be going to a zoo, theme park, trampoline park, or just hang out with Elvis. We are praying for a team of 25 students and adults attending from FUMC. We have about 14 folks committed. Deadline June 7. Inspiring

We have committed to our Jr. Hi. mission with UM Army Basic. We will be serving in Manor, Texas. July 12-16. Students going into 6th grade-completing 8th grade are eligible to attend. Formation of satellite campus

At the encouragement of our Bishop and Conference staff, we have begun the process of establishing a satellite campus.  Our Conference has identified two locations for such campuses. One would be on Highway 46 in the area of Bergheim, and the other on Highway 46 west of town. Last Sunday your Administrative Board approved a process of discerning a start west of town. An Advisory Board, co-chaired by Rusty and Dawn Meador and Bill and Phyllis Nichols, will spend this summer discerning the potential, determining the best day and time to meet, a preferred worship style, and other items.  An agreement has been reached with the Resort at Tapatio Springs to rent a meeting space for the initial location.  The Bishop has selected Rev. Beverly Burk as Lead Pastor.  There will be no cost to our church as the Conference has offered funds as have other individuals.  The Advisory Council will give a final report to the Administrative Board in September.  The anticipated start date would be in October.  Stay tuned for more updates.

VBS needs volunteers

Hey adventurers! Mt. Everest Vacation Bible School is coming SOON to First United Methodist Church, Boerne, and VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED June 15-19 from 9 am to noon.

Please consider joining this years' team for VBS...we need you more than ever!  This could be the BIGGEST VBS yet!  All the students from Project Transformation will join us, in addition to our typically large attendance numbers, so we anticipate more than 330 children taking over our campus June 15-19!

At least 20 more shepherds are needed to accommodate the children who will be coming to hear God's word!  As a shepherd, you will not have to lead any sessions...just shepherd the "flock" to the right place at the right time for story time, music, art, and playtime each day!

This years' theme is "Mt. Everest ...Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power!"  Together, we'll all embark on an icy expedition and learn to overcome obstacles with God's awesome power!  Won't you join us June 15-19?
