this stupid doctor who podcast has made me so insecure and confused about david tennant... i used to think he was widely regarded as a very good actor, but those podcasters basically spent the entire matt smith era being like "tennant could never" and at first i just huffed and disagreed but the longer it went on the more i started to doubt my own taste and judgement. but then when i happen to watch david act in something else i always land on my original opinion again: he's really bloody brilliant.

Some of you wanted to know about the podcast; it's Flight Through Entirety I'm talking about, and let me just make clear that I'm not trying to shit on it. The fact that I kept listening to it even through all of the Tennant bashing shows how much I enjoy it really - and I can also recommend their Blake's 7 podcast Maximum Power by the way.
The main criticism seems to be that David does an intolerable amount of "teeth acting". I haven't seen his Doctor Who era for ages, and I fear if I were to rewatch it now I'd probably disproportionally notice that as well. There are so many other, quite wonderful moments though. Some of them quite vulnerable, and many of them layered, if you're prepared to really look.
The podcasters say that Ten's whole existence is more or less a performance, and I agree with that, but logically you need to factor that into your assessment of the actor's work: What do you dislike exactly, David Tennant's performance or the Doctor's performance?
You all have pretty much said it all. There's a difference between what an actor is asked to do and what he can theoretically pull off.
I'm a bit curious though what I would truly think if I actually rewatched David's original Doctor Who run now. It may well be that he has grown a lot as an actor since then, and that you can't really compare what he's doing these days in Broadchurch, Jessica Jones, Rivals etc. to what he was doing in Casanova or Doctor Who. I only know that I remember being very impressed at the time, and certainly highly entertained.
One thing I remember specifically about his (early) acting is that I could always read him perfectly. With him and with all the actors I've fallen in love with since, that is always my favourite thing when I watch a performance: when I can see clearly in their face what they're thinking, what they're feeling, what they're about to say, or what they're not saying. And there was plenty of that in David's Doctor, of that I am sure. Maybe that's what others consider a lack of subtlety - but I don't think it is.
Anyway, I think I'm just rambling. Thank you all again, I feel much less confused now.

I'm not sure if the convention from your couch is going to be released on YouTube. I know their events usually are but the way Charlie that moderated it was talking on bsky after it seemed like maybe not? Unless he meant just the meet & great part, idk

this "convention on your couch" thing with rhys was really nice and all, but in hindsight i'm kinda wondering if it was worth all that money. because it's basically just a nice hour-long interview that's gonna be available for free anyway in a week or so, and the only priviledge i got from buying a ticket was seeing it live and technically i could have asked a question (which i'd never dare). hmmmm.

I wonder what weird psychological phenomenon it is that prevents people from just articulating what they want or need. It's so common! Is it because they don't really know what they want? Is it because they've been trained to ignore their needs? Is it because they fear rejection? Is it because they think it's impolite??
Most of the time it feels to me like everyone is just being obnoxious on purpose for no reason, but like. there has to be a reason right?
It's just so exhausting and frustrating to be on the other side of it, desperately trying to find out how to help and getting just no hints whatsoever despite asking repeatedly.
Usually I end up having to just try a random way only to be told no, that was not it actually, but here's what would work better. .......okay like.... why didn't you say so before, maybe one of the twelve times I asked maybe??
The thing is I have my issues as well. I have the kind of autism that hates trial and error situations. My MO is to gather intel and prepare. I seem to clash horribly with most of humanity that way.
I run into this same problem every single day, mostly in small ways like at work, when I ask customers at the pharmacy questions to find out which medicine would fit their problem best, and they either give me no answers or more often than you'd think exactly the wrong answers, leading me to inevitably suggest something they know they don't want, and that's the point when the real info starts spilling out of them.
Or sometimes in bigger ways, when my elderly mother has a problem I need to fix but just won't work with me to find out how.
Or many many other situations that all basically can be boiled down to
me: [is tasked with a thing that affects person]
me: so hey can you tell me [information i need to do the thing in a way that's good for person]
person: lol idk
me: [war flashbacks to every time i've been through this before]
me: are you sure?
person: yeah man whatever
me:
me: okay how about thi-
person: [detailed explanation on why my suggestion is terrible and what they would actually prefer]
me, inside: this misery could have been prevented so easily.
"Baba Is You" is a great game, but my brain was struggling so hard to understand or even remember the way all the levels are organised, because there are so many maps and sub-maps and maps that are levels and levels that can be things and things that can be levels and it was doing my head in big time, so I made an excel sheet because that's the kind of autistic I am. I feel accomplished and satisfied now.
