No Kings protests are today!

I’m going to my first protest at 5 o’clock today, but I’m sure a lot of protests have happened already. A few tips:

Bring water and snacks, and a small fan if you have it. You’ll be outside for a while in the heat, and you’ll be surrounded by other people. Stay cool!

Bring shoes that are comfortable for walking.

Bring a fully charged cellphone, any medication you may need (an inhaler if you’re asthmatic), cash in case of an emergency, and a small first aid kit if you can afford one.

Know your rights, and what to do if you are detained or given a dispersal order!

Tell someone you trust where you’re going! Check in with them often!

CARRY NOTHING THAT CAN BE MISTAKEN AS A WEAPON

De-escalate, do not engage if someone tries to provoke you physically or verbally.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CLEAN WATER ON YOU AT ALL TIMES, or isotonic saline. These items are best for rinsing the eyes in case of tear gas.

And finally: Write your emergency contact’s phone number onto some part of your body in permanent marker. This will help in case you have an emergency, or if (God forbid) you need to be identified.

Protests are usually safe! But practice safety precautions to ensure that they stay that way!

We need thoughts and prayers, but we also need policy and change. Praying is NOT solving the problem just like how blaming minority communities and talking in circles around gun control is NOT solving the problem. I hope the victims of the Minneapolis shooting are resting easy, and I hope their classmates live long enough to see the last school shooting. The politicians are sitting in their mansions with six figure salaries, and they are Not on our side. Be the change you want to see in the world, and hold your families close, especially if you have children.

Let us just appreciate that this person’s dad didn’t know when they would be home and so he couldn’t plan for them to be able to join the family for dinner, but he knew with no doubts that dear sweet Meatloaf staying in that exact position for hours was an absolute in this scenario. Truly, that cat was named well.
