THAT'S THE POINT!! I read the book as an adult. That's the whole point. I didn't find it was romanticized, on the contrary I found it was shown as a disastrous consequence of the abuse and the toxic family dynamics the children were trapped in. It's supposed to be dark and make you uncomfortable. Because to me the point was to show what mechanisms in a family create incest, and I think it was very good at showing that.
