All About Caves

Caves are usually made when water runs over soft rock, such as limestone. The acid in the water slowly eats away the limestone, making a hole. The hole gets larger and larger. If the water finds a new path, the cave is left dry. Caves can also be created when hot lava melts rocks, forming holes. For more information, go here.

Who was Ferdinand Magellan?

Ferdinand Magellan was born to noble parents in Portugal in 1480. His parents died when he was a child, and he was sent to be a page to the queen. During this time, he attended school and studied geography, navigation, astronomy and cartography. Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to prove that the Earth is round, not flat. The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms. This coral reef consists of over 2,500 individual reefs and 900 islands. The reef is home to 400 different kinds of coral, as well as fish, birds, worms and crustaceans.

Paraguay Facts

From 1865 to 1870, Paraguay fought a war against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The purpose of the war was to win access to the ocean. Paraguay lost, and over 90 percent of the men in the country were killed. Because of this, the population grew slowly. Women were without husbands and children lost their fathers. You can read more about Paraguay here.

The Roman Catholic Church previously owned many states in Italy. The Vatican City is the only one remaining. The Vatican City has a simple government, ruled by the pope. Its primary purpose is to forward the work and mission of the Catholic Church.

about Clouds

Watching the clouds is not only fun, but it can give you clues about what kinds of weather are coming. Clouds form when tiny droplets of water in the air rise with warm air. As they rise, they get cooler. They combine with other droplets of water to form clouds.

Weasels are rare in North America, but they’re common in Europe and Asia. These tiny mammals have a long, sleek body and small head. They’re perfectly designed hunting machines. Facts on Simple Machines

A machine is anything that helps make work easier. Basic tools like staplers, screwdrivers and scissors are simple machines. These machines are all based on simple inventions like levers, planes, pulleys or wheels. 

A lever is a stiff board or bar that rests on a base called a fulcrum. The fulcrum lifts and moves objects.

A pulley has a rope and wheels. It can be used to pull things up. 

A wedge has a pointed end. It can be driven into something to separate it. 

A wheel and an axle is a type of simple machine. A wheel has a rod, or axle, running through it. 

An inclined plane has a slope that takes you from a lower surface to a higher one. 

A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a rod. It holds things together securely.
