DEAD. I AM DEAD

Everything we learn about Claire is revealed in the first five seconds we see her: she’s an ice queen trope. We know immediately that she’s powerful because she’s in a business outfit, high heels, very serious, and always on her cellphone. Instead of actually showing her personality, the movie gives us an aesthetic that conforms to a stereotype and calls it a day…But every time in the film that Claire pipes up with an idea, a dude dismisses it immediately or starts talking over her. Hey mansplainers! This person you hired to run the park is trying to do her job! Stop prattling on about your helicopter and admonishing her for not having more fun and hear her out.

This week, a years-long NASA mission to Pluto paid off when the New Horizons space probe sent home stunning photos of the planet. Something else that’s exciting about the project: It likely includes more women than any other mission in NASA’s history.
Women make up a quarter of the team working on the project, according to NASA. The picture above shows the female team members at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory on July 11, 2015, just three days before the spacecraft’s closest approach to Pluto.
Particles and plasma science team leader on the New Horizons project team leader Fran Bagenal began her career working on the Voyager project in the 1970s. In those days, there were just a handful of women on the team. “That’s just how it was,” she says. “Space physics was just my way of exploring the solar system.” Bagenal told The Atlantic that she’s not sure if the the Pluto mission technically has the most women ever, “But I was involved in Voyager going back to the ’70s, as well as Galileo, and a whole bunch of missions. I can say: There are certainly a lot of us.”

Can’t even imagine the hell she had to deal with. Bless her. People like her are our modern day heroes.
